4.3 v-6 motor.... so what tranny?

The auto would come with the motor (88 van)  The nv4500 is a good deal (with t.c. adptr) and I have the stock 5 speed.  I dont have a heavy foot and the cost of all the above would be about the same.  I have never driven an auto off road so I dont know what it would be like.  The nv 4500 seems to really apeal to me (any one here use one?).  Thanks Jase  :driving:

I'm running the stock 151 in mine and it works great. Can't beat the yota tranny for nice tight shifting.

Use the stock 5spd. It will shift better and the first gear has a syncro. I guess you would need a custom bell housing though.

if it was a good deal, i would do the nv4500.
i will be using a sm420 in mine.
wish it was a nv4500, but i wont complain since it is a trail rig.
and gotta love the 7 to 1 first.

Buy trans from reputable seller, get warranty, I have a NV4500 HD in my Diesel dodge And got screwed by ( Aamco ) They didnt put my creeper syncro in right after 18000 miles it stopped going into first gear. Be carefull. It is a great trans but get it built right.

I run a stock '85 W56 behind my '92 4.3.  It's held up for over four(4) years with mostly moderate wheeling, but does have a trip through the Fordyce and through Loon Lake Gatekeeper and NO PROBLEMS! 

Still shifts smooth, never been torn down or rebuilt.  Marlin has driven this truck before, no negative comments.

Only maintenance has been the occassional oil change.

If you can SMOG with a W56 or R151/150F you'll be happy.  NV4500 is heavy, $$$, and longer than a Toy tranny.
Some idiots are too busy knowing it all, to ever learn anything...

Thanks, good info.  The size and weight of the nv4500 was my main concern, uh oh my wife just chimed in and voted for the auto. But I told her she cant vote until she registers.  :smack:

I see alot voted for the stock 5spd..I would run a toy turbo tranny behind that v-6 and none of the others if it was an option..

There are two different versions of the NV 5600 Cast iron ( HD) Then there is one with cast aliuminum body. My Stock toyota trans has been beat to hell and back no complaints or rebuilds as of yet. W -56 I believe

The stock 5 speed I have is the G52 from a carbed 86 pickup. I see most don't run that one..I don't know it that makes a difference.  The NV is the cast iron case, so it would be a bit porky.

G 52 I got, my goof, Cast Iron GVW has higher rated, In my case with the Diesel behind it it is geared low and close with first as a creeper. I recently bought a 88 Toyota truck V-6 4x4 blown motor (bad head ) so I have yet to learn about V6 world drive train and motor. The Truck was 700.00 and the frame has no rust. Sooner or later I should have a mother load of spare parts.
