3.4 or 22re?

I have an 88 4Runner with a 3.0 engine. I rebuilt this engine once already due to the head gaskets, that was about 10k miles ago. I started seeing oil and water in both the radiator and the dip stick not too long ago, so i used a gasket repair sealant and it worked so far, but im thinking of changing to either 3.4L or 22re before I have to put more $$ into this engine. So 3 questions: Which one would be easier? Which one would be cheaper? And would the 22ret be better?

Hands down 3.4. No question.  :twocents:
Wait... What?

It bolts right in. but wiring is kinda a nightmare. but at the same time its alot more power and I love my 3.4l. 22re is a pia to swap as you need new mounts, trans ect... and then you have wiring and you are still stuck with a under powered 4runner.

ohhh and 22ret's suck they dont have a intercooler so any one you find will have issues as its just had hot air blown in it for its whole life and they make what 15 more hp from stock? not worth the extra 500 to find one.

So there's no need to change the trans?

3.4 uses the same bottom end as the 3.0 so yes it bolts right up to your stock transmission.

Wiring is not that hard. No need to spend a ton on a jumper harness. Just research.

Oh, I didn't know that there was a game show involved in which everything was to be done in 2 days.

Seriously though, even with a harness I doubt that someone of average skill and average tools could do the swap PROPERLY (clean and correct) in two days. Maybe if you had 3+ guys but still I would be suspect. Go rent a car for $18 bucks a day if you have to and do things right. I am sure that there are plenty of stories out there of guys doing the swap in x amount of time, but my kid can "clean his room"  a hell of a lot faster than I can also. Doesn't mean its done worth a damn.

There are only about 12-15 wires to hook up for the swap that you wouldn't have to with a harness. If that takes three weeks then maybe the harness is a good deal then. Honestly, I have read more stories lately about guys troubleshooting pre-made harness and shipping them back and forth for "fixing" that are in 3-4 week time frame. If you are local then maybe this wouldn't be such an issue. Also, I would want to know what the heck is going on since I own this vehicle and therefore can troubleshoot future issue myself.

The truck is running now. Take some time to read and do some homework on the wiring and reading electrical diagrams of the truck and whatever you get the donor motor from while you keep driving your truck as is. It going to take some time to find a donor anyway. I would recommend a pre 2001 personally and preferably a Runner as they do NOT have EGR valves and are 50 state

I have a 93 4runner that came with a 3.0L automatic 4x4. It now has a first gen 22R block with an 83 to 84 21 bolt head on it so I could run EFI. Well I ended up buying an 91 EFI 5speed 4x4 for a complete "running, driving" parts truck. So out came the old 3.slow and auto tranny and in came the new 22R and 5speed. Now you do have to cut the 3.0 mounts off and weld on the 22R mounts on.Now here comes the hard part...... Wiring..... well I pretty much stripped the entire harness out of the vehicle. I then traced all the engine wires from the engine bay and removed them one at a time.I then removed all the ECU wires rewrapped and reinstall the harness and then...... I stacked the 91 harness on top and put it back together.Plugged  all the wires in on the engine and she fired up and runs like a champ! The electric windows, locks, mirrors, sunroof and the "91" dash works great. So it can be done. But If I could go back in time and put the 3.4 in it, I wouldn't of. The parts truck I bought for $500 had $2800 CASH under the seat when I bought it. WOOO HOOO! So it was fate. The runner was built for a fraction of what it should have cost me.I love the 3.4. I swear the 3.4 and 22RE get the same gas mileage. So It would make sense to put a 3.4 in your runner. It's alot easier but a little more expensive.

I have a 3.4L in both my tacos which I love!!  I am going to get a supercharger for it soon after the truck is done.  I have had a 3.0L in my old 4 Runner and sucks!

3.4L with a manual  in the one taco
3.4L with a auto in the other taco.

auto sucks!, but since it will never be much on the road am keeping the auto as it is nice to have just eats up the power.
