Ive thought about that, would be cool. Looking for something a little cheaper and easier to make. I will buy 1st gen 4runner panels if they are in good condition. Thanks

I made fiber board sides... coated them in fiberglass resin to keep em water tight..

then wraped them in vinyle and used self tapping screws to attach them..  Unfortunitly i didnt get pictures of the finished product
Those are some huge welds!

The fiberboard was acquired at a local lumberyard (same stuff as speaker boxes are made from)..  Vinyl i got from a "craft" type store.  fabric store, upholstery shop, whatever....

I cut out the pattern then proceeded to coat the inside and out of the wood with fiberglass resin, (im sure there is something else you can use that might be easier and faster but thats what i had) this made it water tight...

Took the vinyl layed it over the wood and cut it so i could wrap it over the edges, sprayed some 3m headliner type glue on both the vinyl and the wood and pressed them together... after they set up a bit i wrapped the vinyl around the corners and stapled it to the back of the wood. this gave it a nice tight finish.  Then i cut reliefs into it so i could have holes for my speakers and access for my jack and storage area..

Got some not so great pictures today (was to dark to see most details) but these are as it sits..

dirty and covered in mud because of my lack of inner fenders....YES lol. but they do there job, they look pretty :)

I dont have the doors on them anymore mainly because they were just getting in the way trying to open them... i used kitchen cabinet hinges that were hidden on the inside and the doors opened out.
sorta like these

I wonder if aluminum would rattle and be cold.

I wonder if aluminum would rattle and be cold.

It shouldn't rattle if you use screws and some adhesive.  As for being cold, the oem panels don't offer much in the way of insulation as it is.  In the ones I have restored I have stuffed some foam or fiberglass insulation(paper side out or in garbage bags) between the two panels. I didn't keep the Runners long enough to see how the insulation worked, though it did quiet down the road noise quite a bit.

Stumbled across this and thought I'd add a pic of the aluminum panels I made in case other people come across this thread.  Was pretty easy to make, just traced the old cracked panels onto the aluminum and cut them with an electric shear.
