Obama to Boehner: 7 proposed regulations would cost more than $1 billion each

In a letter to House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, Obama lists four proposed Environmental Protection Agency rules and three Department of Transportation rules estimated to cost in excess of $1 billion. One of the proposed EPA rules -- an update to the health-based standard for smog -- is estimated to cost the economy between $19 billion and $90 billion.

Wasn't it Sen. Everett Dirksen who once said "A billion here, a Billion there...pretty soon you're talking real money"?

With all the talk lately of budgets, deficits and bail-outs in the trillion dollar range a billion for anything out of the Feds seems like a bargain. All that talk of trillions has also had the effect of desensitizing people to the actual size of what a billion is.

Excellent memory.... he is generally credited with that quote, perhaps incorrectly however.

On large sums of money, this may be a repost but it's a good illustration: http://www.pagetutor.com/trillion/index.html

I wonder what that last illustration would be...converted to acre-feet? Maybe that would be a better way to describe it..."Today Congress wasted 150 acre-feet of your tax dollars".

You're probably right...I looked it up and found this instead though..."If some people get any cheer out of a $328 billion debt ceiling, I do not find much to cheer about concerning it." [Congressional Record, June 16, 1965, p. 13884].

Check out the debt ceiling Congress was arguing over around '65...$328 Billion...that might cover the interest on today's debt.

We need more than a head from ass dislodging. We need a complete turn around. Go back on the gold and silver standards so we dont have to borrow money for our money to be worth anything.

Hell, I'm starting to miss Carter!
My first thought was -- no way, you cannot be serious. It only took me a brief moment to realize that you might well be on to something. Remembering Carter, that's quite a statement.
