Best way to really clean some dirty seats
« on: Feb 07, 2005, 08:31:19 PM »
I got a killer deal on some bucket seats for 25 bucks to replace my nasty plastic vinyl bench seat.  However, they look like they've sat outside for a year.  The fabric needs a good deep cleaning and the brackets and stuff need to be wire brushed to get some of the surface rust off them.  Anybody have any suggestions to get these seats back to almost new?  Or should I invest in some seat covers?  If I go seat covers, what kind are good and affordable.  I'm building a build crawler so no expensive stuff here

I bought a small steam cleaner from Walmart for $40 and it made my seats look like new. It does a number on muddy fabric.

I know this one...It sounds crazy, and takes a long time to dry, but I guarantee it will work...
Use some orange fantastic and one of those stiff white kitchen bushes...put some elbow grease into them.  Scrub scrub scrub...sometimes I use some of that Oxy-clean crap on it too...
Then hit it with the hose or power washer...the soap and brush breakes the dirt and grease out, then the water forces it out of the fabric...
Yes it will take a while to dry, I recomend putting a garbage bag on the seat and sitting on it to sqeeze water out, but it will be clean.  Then bust out the scotch guard and walla, clean seats that smell like a brand new car!
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

you can get some decent neoprene seat covers at wallys world, or at least you could a while back, like $20 a set.  Not to bad, and the neoprene is nice, absorbs water so if you have wet clothes, it doesnt soak into the seat

Yes seat covers are nice, but if the seats are filthy and greasy all you are going to do is cover the site not the smell,

How well did they fit?  Were they Toyota specific or just a bucket in general?  Anybody else have any suggestions on seat covers?
