Hi I'm a newb. And I was hoping you guys could help me and give me some advise with what diesel to use for a swap in my 85 Toyota pickup. I would really appreciate any advise and tips on this swap. This is the best place to find out cause I know a lot of you have done this before. Thank you

Is that the Mercedes diesel? If so I think I've seen that 4x4 labs has a adapter. I'm just not sure if it can be used with the Toyota trans. Do you guys think it would be better to try and find a Toyota diesel? Or what do you guys think about vw or cummins diesels.

4x4 labs has an adapter for the R and W series toyota transmissions. I would not waste time finding a toyota diesel engine. The mercedes are way easier to find in the US.

That are adapters made to mate a VW TDI from a modern Jetta/Beatle etc to a Toyota transmission.

One that comes to mind is ACME Adapters. http://www.acmeadapters.com/index.php?sound=Y
Most of their stuff is for Suzuki applications but it is does it using Toyota transmissions and transfer cases.

Volkswagon actually sells re-badged tacomas in Europe.

I think the TDI's are only 1.8 or 1.9 litre as where the OM617's are 3.0.

But they put out the same amount of power...and chipped TDI's are good for almost 200hp and get 40mpg

I vote the OM617 and 4x4 Labs adapter as well. Its the best bang for your buck and reliable diesel swap for Toyotas. A Cummins would be the ultimate swap but definitely not cheap.

Definitly the OM617. Thats what my dream swap is. The Cummins in not only expensive but the motor is the size of a 460 Ford big block.

Which vw diesel would be the best ? And I've seen some of the guys on this forum do the om617 swap and it was to tall for the first gem. Would I have the same problem with my 85? Would I have to make a custom hood scope? And what engine year would be the best for the vw diesel be and year of the om617 and do you guys think it would be better to have a Manuel pump or fuel injected vw diese. And thanks for all the imput guys I really appreciate everything.

Which of the two diesel would I be able to get the most horse power out of, with is more dependable and reliable, cheapest to maintain and finally which has the most aftermarket parts for performance. Thanks again guy and sorry for all the dumb questions. I'm a newb and just trying to do a diesel swap. and I know this is the best place do get all the best information for guys that really know what there doing. Thanks again.

I have done quite a bit of snooping around the 4bt forums but i got more interested in the even smaller cummins 4cyl cummins engines used overseas and in tractors/generators here.

They are probably loud as hell, but you can buy some of the models new, get parts for them easily, and they bo
lt up easily to transmissions commonly found here. To my surprise in the above link, it looks like Nissan may be getting a smaller Cummins; let's hope so.

I like the idea of the Mercedes swap, too. It would just be nice to get something really efficient, reliable, and with a ton of torque.

Thanks for all the info guy would that smaller four cylinder cummins bolt to a Toyota trans? It's probably a custom adapter right or do you guys think they make a kit to bolt to a Toyota trans to cummins disel.is the 4 cylinder cummins the 3b?

Phoenix casting has a adapter to go from sae to gm and then you use advance adapters gm to Toyota adapter to use the Toyota trans. Do you guys thong the Toyota trans would hold up to the b3.3?

A upgraded R151F should survive just fine.

I am curious to know more about the Mercedes CDI Sprinter van options. As those get longer in the tooth, full swaps could become affordable in the future as well.

Have you considered one of the Toyota diesel engines? Once you find all of the parts there could be alot less hassle in the conversion. Some good info can be found here: www.toyotadiesel.com

I have a 2lt in a 1987 Toyota that worked out quite well.

I have been really interested in a Toyota diesel but then I did a lot of research on a cummins 3.3t and found that the best way to go insted a Toyota diesel. How much do you want for your toy diesel and where are you located . I'll buy a truck with a toy diesel already in there
