i have a little alligator style air compressor made by smittybuilt take about 30-40 minutes to air my 35/12.50 inch tires from 8psi to 32. has anyone delt with a airtank that they maybe fill up at home to 130 psi and use that to fill all 4 tires up to say 25 psi and the compressor to fill the rest of the way. my 33 gal garage compressor filled to 150 max will fill all my tires from 8-35psi in about 7 minutes with out needing to be turned on, naturally im not gonna haul my big ass compressor around with me wheelin, just curious to get someons opinion wether a 10gal tank or 20 gal tank would be worth it to mount under the bed or just throw in the bed with out taking up to much room. i dont want t0 go buy one find out i could use a little bigger one for what i need. i dont want to tap into my a/c compressor or buy a expensive 400 dollar compressor

have you looked into CO2?  I carry a 20# bottle, I can fill all 4 of my 40's from 10 psi to 25 psi in about 5 minutes.  just a thought.

something like that is exactly what im talkin about (spam hunters post) just wasnt sure if i bought a 10 gal tank and it only aired one tire up to 25 or all 4 to 20 it wouldnt be worth it as far as being fast. i need to find a conversion chart or something that tells me i have a 15 gallon tank at 150 psi and will put x amount psi into x volume (capacity being 4 35 inch tires) just kinda looking on the cheap side dont want to worry about wether i need c02 when i go wheelin, compressed air is free and in my garage lol

thanks spam hunter ya ive been lookin at the 11 gal tanks from harbor freight for 40 bucks if i can find a good place underneath and out of the way it would be perfect if not maybe under my tool box in the bed or just throw it in the bed when i leave home pics would be awesome

*** YELLER ***

I have a box cut into my bed also just behind the tailgate on my runner there should be enough room behind the crossmember under the bed to hold the tank under yer rig  where it wont get in the way of anything, what are you driving might help to see pics of where ya want to put it, another option is big rig air tanks that you might be able to get from wrecking yard real cheep, and mount under the same way :dunno:

its a 91 extended cab ive thought about underneath from my spare tire mount or under my toolbox that sits in the bed underneath the back window iv got maybe 14 inches between the bed and bottom of the box or just throw it in the bed before i leave home, underneath the bed sound like a good idea tho

emsvitil

If your spare can handle 50psi or more (otherwise it won't hold enough air) you can use it as a air tank.

Just make a air hose with 2 clip on the stem ends...........

I would put this one under the bed where the spare tire use to go and call it good, it should be outa the way enough so it wont get damaged but you could always put a skid plate in there somewhere for the tank

and plumb the compressor to the tank mount the comp in the tool box to keep it clean and wont have to listen to when charging and yer set

or how about making a bracket for a york compressor that lets you still use the stock pump for A.C.

Marlin has one.

ohh.        I was just throwing it out there,  seeing that a york can be had for about $40 at the junkyard and it will air up a set of 35's in about 4 minutes.

weakyota91

i really like the spare tires idea to as a "air tank" never even thought about that im definetly gonna make a hose to run air from my spare to my 4 truck tires

Co2 is probably fastest, but second to that is a York or its electric cousin the Oasis compressor.

there are some compressors that the lowrider guys use that are nice too.

when I had my jeep I was able to bolt on a York compressor to the engine, it was capable enough to use air tools with a 2.5 gallon tank... I frequently used it to air up me and 3 of my buddies after a trail run. and it was FAST!

so can anyone tell me how much a 5-7 gallon air tank pressurized to 150 psi would fill a 35 inch tire from 8psi to 20psi and then maybe a second one to 15 until the pressure just completely equals out, i guess i should find a physics teacher to figure out that problem for me lol  :hammerhead: i would need to find the volume of a 35x12.5 inch tire? i will look into c02 a little later when the tanks are in my price range i really havent been wheel often enought to want to have a c02 tank always laying around filled or worry about going to get it filled.

emsvitil

Look up the equation for the volume of a donut.

Figure the tread thickness at 1", so OD would be your tire diameter - 2"  (33")

Use 1/2" for sidewall, so thickness would be width - 1"  (I'll assume 12.5" = 11.5")

Then for ID  use OD - thickness   (33 -11.5) 21.5"

That should get you some idea of the volume....

He said he didnt want to spend money needlessly, tap into his ac or buy a 400 dollar compressor

You keep your stock AC compressor so you still have AC
You have a bracket to run the york under it
You have quite possibly the best on board air around with it.  Especially if you run it to a tank. Ive run all sorts of air tools off them
Still stay cool on the trail. . You can pick yorks up at the junkyard for 60 bucks all day long. a half a day fudging with a bracket and a belt and you are set.

Also i use a stock toyota AC compressor for my onboard air. I can air up all 4 of my 40" boggers in maybe 5 mins.

That should get you some idea of the volume....

For ID you should take your OD and subtract the wheel size, not the tread width.

How long does it take to air up to 20 psi?  There really isn't any need to go any higher unless you're driving a long distance and then just stop at a gas station with good air to finish the job.

Seriously?

why not just get one of these?  http://www.walmart.com/ip/Floor-Pump/11065181?sourceid=1500000000000003260420&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=11065181

It will last longer and probaby fill up tires just as fast as that smitty pump.

If you truly want a "quicker way to air up after wheelng"  then get a york from the junkyard and a little scrap metal and make a bracket.  If you want to shave a minute or two off of your time airing up for about the same price, then get a tank. But make sure you get one a lot bigger than 2.5 gallons. I have a 2.5 on mine and the pump kicks on about 5 seconds after I hook up the chuck, and stays on till the tires are full.
