-pull out birfied and axle asembly
-remove d-shaft
-remove third

26mm??  something like that...

remove the driveline while the fluid is draining.

two choices, go in from the hub side...

or go in from the felt wiper side.

either one requires pulling C clip.

on the hub side, remove the locking hub assembly.
remove the wheel bearing nuts (two with mallable lock washer between them).
Remove Caliper (loosen brake line) and hang off spring or somewhere.
Pull rotor assembly, bearing should fall out, catch it.
remove seal, backing plate and spindle, note where gaskets are (two paper, have replacements ready)
Pull birf
Do other side
now remove third member, use rubber mallet to break free.  Have new gasket ready.

On reassembly, seal your paper gaskets to one side only.  this way, when you take it apart on the trail, your gaskets stay put.

Suggest you inspect/repack steering arm bearings.  Literally remove the steering knuckle from axle end and clean it up.  Also, new felt wiper and what not on inside.

You're there, you might as well tag it all.

have lots of disposable shop towels ready, parts cleaner and a long afternoon.

take care...

i think i paid 12 bucks for my socket at napa.  i don't know what size it is.  like brandon said, good ol screw driver and hammer works too.

have you ever removed cone washers before?  they are a pain sometimes.  i usually use a center punch in between the split.

Yeeee....  26mm ... what was I thinking!!
Thanks Brandon!

ya, a screw driver works but after finally getting the hub socket, I replaced all those chewed up nuts.

Cone washers:  I found a good whack directly on the stud with brass drift and BFH usually gets 'em.

leave the nut on, right at the end of the stud, for thread protection especially if your using a small drift that might glance off.

and don't loose or toss those little cone washers, they're awful pricey if you have to replace.

take care...

good idea to pick up a few extra tab lock washers from toyota, worth the buck or so to keep the nut from backing off...

Ok  :help:
You can get a Toyota kit for the front end but it does not include the following
Rear or inner wheel bearing seal
Inner axle seal

Marlin and others sell kits with those in them I think.

If you want to go budget replace any thing worn looking and the inner axle seal. reuse the rest and do not use silicone. If it had it before, you will most likely rip them getting it apart. The felt wiper may need replacing too, but the rubber one is more omportant.

by the way its a 54mm and for the cone wasers I used a big brass punh that kind of fit in the hub goove for the cone washers. ill try a punch in the washer grove next time. And for beginers when you get to pulling the birf and axle mak sure the flat spot lines up with the little thing under it that prevents it from coming out if its not lined up
