Topic: Sulfur smell from 3.slow

My buddies 92 4Runner has a sulfur like smell that comes from somewhere in the enigne bay while hes driving. I smelled it for the first time tonight and it lasted for a good 5 10 minutes. He thinks its got to do with the cooling system but isnt completely sure. He said that he pulled some rubber gasket like material out of the radiator today. I havnt a clue on what it could be. Not really knowledgeable on the newer stuff. Anyone got an idea?

i don't think coolant would smell like sulfur.  i've seen bad cats that smell like sulfur, but it was usually when driving down the road and the fumes made there way into the cab.  bang on the cat with your hand and see if you hear a rattleing sound.  if you don't have a bunch of steam pouring out of the exhaust when it first starts and is cold, it's probably not a head gasket.

X2 on the cat.  If the gasket like material in the rad is thin and stringy, it is likely from someone over using FIPG on something like the water pump or thermostat housing.

its definately the cat have your friend replace it and the smell will disapear

Yeah I know the smell your talking about. Check the cats like everyone else said.

Put a "test" pipe in and it will give him more power and might make it sound a little better.

Hes ok. Walked away with some bruises, scratches and a little sore. I think we are going to try to resurrect it by cutting in a roof from another runner
