A340F not shifting
« on: May 30, 2011, 06:01:08 PM »
Hi guys long time PBB member here. I'm looking for some help with a 97 T100 Auto my buddy put behind a 22re in a 86 runner that had a A340H in it.

The swap is done and it drives great some of the time. Sometimes the auto will not shift no matter what we try. It will always manualy shift from first to reverse but no other gears. You can be driving down the road and it shifts great, pull up to a stop light and take off again and it wont come out of first no matter how high it's reved up.

Any thoughts on what I should do??

Ok so I need to check all my conections?

Could the VSS be bad?

Out of curiosity, how did you make that work?  The 22RE has a separate TCU, and an A340F is usually controlled by the engine ECU.  So that's where I'm confused.  It doesn't seem like a very straight forward swap.  I'll go with electrical just based on that, but who knows.

A VSS is easy to test.  With a continuity meter attached to both leads, spin it and it should give you continuity exactly 4 times per revolution.  And then make sure that it is receiving 12 volts.

Also, a lot of people don't realize that the A340F needs two different speed sensors.  One of them is in the transmission and the other is in the combination meter.  That could be a problem.

EDIT:  One more thought.  I have heard that shift solenoids going out is a common problem.  This is a possibility since the problem seems to be intermittent.  They work on a system of 2 solenoids.  First gear is #1 on #2 off.  Second is #1 on #2 on.  Third is #1 off #2 on.  Fourth is #1 off #2 off.  That may help you to determine which one is the problem.

What is the combination meter?

The gauge cluster...  The thing with the speedometer, temp gauge, etc.

Ok well we are running the stock cluster so that maybe a start.

Has anybody else done this swap on here?

I came here after many long talks with Marlin himself and he said this was the swap I needed to do.
