The Toystaff over at 4x4wire are attempting to compile a bunch of general Toy info to put up...

... but we're kinda lost on the A340F trannies that came before '95-'96 or so (when the 2.7L and 3.4L engines came out).

We know that the A340H is the one w/ the electronic/hydraulic t-case that can't be turned into a crawler...

We know that at least the A340F that came behind the 3.4L (what about 2.7L?) can be crawlerized...

Can the earlier A340F also be Crawlerized? I know it has a manual-shifting t-case... but that's about it (side-shifting according to the '91 factory manual I was looking at).

What years/vehicles/engines did the early A340F come in?

I know the A340H came behind both 22re's and and 3.0V6's, so the A340F being mixed in there somewhere with the same years/engines is kinda strange...

Marlin is the only one we can think of who might possibly be able to answer these questions.   :help:

FWIW, I don't think any of us have ever actually SEEN an early A340F, but it is in the factory manuals...

OK, one more question to add to the mix-
'93-94 T100's came w/ 3.0's or 2.4's...
'95-98 T100's came w/ 3.4's or 2.7's...
All with pass. side t-cases.
Same tranny/t-case for all years T100's??? (almost surely for the 5spd, no idea for the autos)

340e was for the 2wd versions, IIRC.

and erik, maybe the 340f came in the t100s.  but you know the 2nd gens 4runners and pickups pre 95.5/96 all came with 340h with v6s.

Yep, the a340e is the 2wd (comes in Supra's and maybe some others too).

The '91 FSM also mentions an A44D or something like that too (2wd also IIRC).

Its just that the '91 FSM also shows the A340F, so we're wondering what vehicles it might have come in...
Little Joe said the early 90's FSM's he's looked at show it too (and those manuals don't have anything to do w/ the T100).

I found this:

"The A340F was found in '84-89 Non SR5 4WD Pickups, '96+ 4Runners, and all T-100s, Tacomas, and Tundras."

...Which I think is a quote from "SuperRunner" Rob, but don't know of its accuracy, and still don't know if the early one can be crawlered...

Not sure if anyone is still interested in this but I have a 94 4Runner with the A340H and am planning on a swap. The early T100 4x4 3.0 V6 did in fact have the A340F with a passenger side Transfer case. so did 4cyl trucks and 4Runners with AT. I reviewed Phil Johnson conversion documentation and was concerned with the speed sensor and magnetic rotor installation process when using the 96 and newer A340F transmission. After calling Marlin he suggested looking at the 93-94 T100 4x4 3.0 V6 transmission as an option that would not need millwork. I am currently confirming the type of speed sensor that was used but it does look to be the correct type. The next issue is that there are very few of these available and the cost seems to run about $400- $500 more than the abundant 96 and newer version. Using a 4cyl Transmission may also be an option but there may be issues with the torque converter from those models mating to the 3VZE V6. If anyone  has any info on the use of the 4cyl Tranny on a V6 I would love to hear it.

So can a 94 4Runner with AT be "cralirized"?  :headscratch:

Yes It Can. The question is how much work do you want it to be to do the conversion. check out the process here. www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/autocrawler/

hey, i have some corrections for 4x4wires toyota faq:

'79 trucks had 4.375s instead of 4.10s like it says
'81 still had the round headlights, 82 was the first year of square headlights
power steering, power brakes, and a/c were all available since '79(i know power brakes were even around in mid 70s toys)
