I just picked up a 22R with 169,000 miles on it. Runs great, but have not idea what weight or brand oil was being used.
Would like opinions on what to use in this motor.
Thanks in advance.

I would run a good top of the line 10w-30 conventional motor oil, if it has not been running a synthetic I would not start since the miles are high. If you want to run a high mileage oil that would be an option since it will help the old seals. I personally run Castrol 10w-30 straight up with no additives for the most part if you use a good brand of your choice there should be no issues most of them fight sludge buildup. A little tip to keep down the sludge is to add a pint of Dextron auto trans fluid 1,500 miles before each oil change, you'll have the cleanest engine in town. I change mine every 5,000, 3,000 is a myth promoted by the oil change quick lubes. You could safely follow the owners manual since they are the ones that set the standard for their engines. For me the main reason I change mine every 5,000 is simply because I change it on the 15,000 and 10,000 marks to simplify knowing when and since I do consider the extreme use we do offroad. Also don't fall for the synthetic blends they are just a waste.

Thanks for the tip on the Dextron.

Dingman.

I run mobil 1 10w-40..

My dad always ran mobil 1 so that's what I use.. its funny how that works out

Anyways.. got the motor with 130,000, replaced the rear main seal before I did the 3.4 swap and switched it over to mobil 1 then.  Been good so far..

That's why I gave a generic answer, even though I have extensive training on the proper oils to use and what kind be it synthetic or recycled. My training was biased toward the company I worked for but I understand peoples personal choices since the brand I use personally is not who I was trained by. Everyone is going to have their personal choice of brand but staying within the guidelines of the manufacturer is always best since they know their product best. As a good example if your don't follow Mercedes 0W-40 synthetic rating guide you will void your warranty and the same goes for Fords 5w-20 since you will kill the oil pump.

it's a 22r, dump any fairly clean oil with the right viscosity for your temps and run it.  That thing is just getting broke in with under 200K on it.

They were built to be run on 3rd world gas and oil- I wouldn't sweat it too much. :)
