Project 92Yota Daily Driver
« on: Feb 13, 2011, 05:19:25 PM »
Hey all. Im Zach. Bought my first toyota from a buddy of mine for $550. Figured id start me up a build up thread. Really just started working on it this past weeked. Heres how it was sitting when i bought it minus the wheels and tires.

Heres a quick rundown-
1992 Toyota Pickup
4wd
22RE
5 Speed
Not sure on what size suspension lift. Its IFS and it looks like it has relocated spindles to a lower position or something and about a 4" block in the rear.
3" Body Lift

I guess the previous owner before my buddy sold it cause he got bored with it. It was his first 4wd . It had 35's on it when he had it and he said it was under powered (not geared) and started to take the motor apart. Took the intake and starter off and then sold it. My buddy bought it and sold the wheels and tires off it and sold the rest to me. After a few weeks its finally in the garage at my brothers. After playing musical wheels for about and hour and a half that is lol. Took the chrome pushbar off, rear chrome bumper, cleaned all the stuff out of the bed, and cleaned the cab out. Only thing really wrong with the interior was it needed to be basically put back togethor. Door panel was off on driver side, radio is gone, couple dash peices off. Got it all back togethor minus a few peices. Will get some pics of the interior later this week. While it was in the garage we went ahead and threw my brothers 38's off his yota to see how they fit. Had a good 2"s from rubbing. Plan on getting the motor back togethor some time this week or next week. Hopefully it runs good.

Great buy man...tires and wheels alone are worth 550.
I'd ditch the body lift and go all suspension lift.

SAS is definatly in the near future. Just plan on getting it running for now. I love how the 38s look on the truck just wish they were permanent lol. It'll have 35s on it for around town driving. Any suggestions on wht gears I should go with? It'll be for mostly highway driving.

Oh and a stinger and possible flatbed is in the future too.

About how much does a gear install cost on a Toyota? Hope to get a few things done in the next few days.

Here's my plans:
Put the truck back on jack stands
Turn the rotors and new pads in front
New brakes for rear
Paint whole under carriage

So ive been pretty busy with work but my brother has been working on the truck. Got it back togethor and it wouldnt idle and was pouring oil and coolant. My brother noticed there was an awfull lot of silcone used on the engine so we decided to yank it to replace all the silicone with actuall gaskets to stop the leaking. Also figured while we was at it we would rebuild the motor. He pulled the head and the pistons dont come all the way up the block. About a 1/4 inch short. Found the no power problem. Well after my brother did some research he said i need a 22re block (im guessing what i have now is the 22r?). The body lift is off on the bed and hope to do the cab soon. Still clears the 38's with no body lift

for daily driving you are going to hate that truck with anything less than 5.29 gears.  I have 35's and 5.29's and I wouldnt even consider going bigger without going 5.71's or something

good cause its all about gearing with these trucks and keeping them under 4000 pounds is a good idea,  although my 79 is around 4500

from what you said you do have the early block with the re pistons in it which would have about a 5:1 compression ratio.  I'd be surprised if it run at all.

It barely ran when my brtoehr tried cranking it. So from the picture you sent me, are all the 85-95 22r/22re block the short deck blocks? Or do i need to make sure its a 22re block?

all the 85-95 blocks are the same.   you can also put a tape measure on them.  22RE blocks are 11.080  inches, the earlier 20R and 22R blocks are 11.280 basically a 1/4 inch difference.

not all, Ive seen some base model trucks with carbs as late as 1992 but the blocks and heads are the same.

Progress pics!!

Motor togethor and in!

Before we set the motor in. Got the body lift off, put on the new wheels and 33s. Added a tool box i bought for $50 and painted black.

Found that the suspension lift is from Trailmaster and is fairly new. Just gotta put on the trans supports, intake, starter, alternator, and its good to start. Gotta fix a few things on the suspension also.
