Interesting observation.....

My transmission ran cooler from Palmdale to Inglewood with the load of my sisters car than it did running an empty trailer from Inglewood to Palmdale yesterday.   This from the feel of the heat from the shift lever....  (4600lbs trailer and car  vs 1300lbs trailer alone)

The only difference being that I didn't use 5th gear with the car on the trailer.

Wouldn't have thought that 5th gear would add that much friction and heat than direct drive 4th.

Makes you wonder if you could save gas with 4th gear if you're beyond a certain load because of less friction....................

are you sure it's friction that's causing the heat issue?

fifth gear should be lower than the rest causing it to be "cooler" because the gear's turning slower   :dunno:

4th gear is direct drive and no power or load goes thru the countershaft or any internal gears.

With 5th, you have power going from the input shaft to the counter shaft then to 5th gear and the output shaft.

That would add friction and heat because of the 2 gears in use (input/counter  counter/5th).
