what route to take....

OK here is the dilemma... i just purchased a 82 toyota pickup 4x4.. the owner told me that the truck has 4.88's and its locked front and back up.. the truck has no engine and the tranny is bad.. ok so i have my 88 4runner.. that is my dd.. so my question is should i  sas my runner or build the truck? any suggestions would help thanks..

I am biased since I LOVE 1st gen trucks.  If it has 4.88s and just needs an engine and trans then I would fix it.   My buddy is selling his good L52 out of his 83.  L52 is a much better trans then the L50 which the 82 comes with.  As for the engine, He is selling his as well and its a sweet running 83 22R motor.  It was rebuilt but it was a pure off road rig so it has low mileage on it.  He would sell both for like 500.00

This just shows how cheap you can get great 1st gen stuff.  It would be A LOT cheaper to fix the 82 then to do the SAS on the runner.  A lot less WORK too. lol

i agree. first gens are sweet! and you have less glass to brake and you wont be so top heavy!

keep runner as dd and slowly build the first gen you'll love it so much more u can do with first gen IMO

I have an engine gasket set and clutch kit for dirt cheap locally if you decide to build the first gen.  It's new stuff just need to get rid of it.

If the 4 runner is a good DD than i would leave it as is and then build the other one to play. There is nothing worse than destroying your DD.

as mentioned above, keep your runner as DD and build the 1st gen.

well it depends how much space do you need id build the82 but if you need the space than sas the 4runner

i think their were a few people giving out 20r's and selling 22r's for cheap, i would think its cheaper to fix the 1st gen up

If you tear apart you runner and the pickup has no engine/trans how are you going to drive anywhere. Makes sense to me to keep the runner whole and have fun with the truck.

keep the 4 runner as is and fix up the truck if you already have a good daily driver you dont want to rip it apart and reck it not to mention it would be hard to get around once you do

I say max out the runner, sas and the lot and fix the truck as a dd.

If you're planning to bash your rig off road then build the first gen truck and use the 4Runner for a daily driver.  If you take care of your rig off road there isn't any reason that you can't use the 4Runner to wheel and as a daily driver. You just have to build strong and wheel smart.  Also, the 4Runner will give you more room for the future if you have a family that want to go camping or wheeling.  Swap the running gear from the first gen and put it in the 4Runner.

I missed what year 4Runner it is...I'm thinking first generation like mine since mines built pretty sweet and works as well as a daily driver as it would stock for the most part.
