rpm guage working on and off ?
« on: Feb 05, 2011, 08:39:51 PM »
Truck is a 1985 22re and today the rpm gauge starting working periodically also the charge light and handbrake light are now on and the auto AT temp this truck has a 5 speed swap and I have never seen this light come on and the swap was done 5 years ago. I did just hook up a radio could this be the issue that caused the problems. I drove the truck all day with the charge light on and it never died ??? I have a yellowtop (2 years old) with new terminals also added when I put in the stereo the other day, so I dont think its a battery issue or connection issue at the battery.

Put a voltmeter on the battery when it's running and see what the voltage is.............

you probably jarred some connector, or pulled out a wire from somewhere when installing the radio

It was the alternator gone after that was causing all the issues.

Funny thing is the rpm gauge is still not working all the time again. I am also figuring it is a loose wire.

Pull your cluster out and unplug and replug the connectors.  My first truck was an '83 and the tach didn't work when I bought it.  Had to pull the cluster to get to the headlight relays and when I put it back together, the tach worked.  It was still working when I rolled it and sold it.

After installing my aftermarket stereo, periodically, the rpm gauge stopped working when I would turn the car on. I figured out all I had to do was turn the car off, then when i started it back up, it the gauge started to work again.
