Hi, everyone. I have a 1980 toyota pickup 4x4 that i am rebuilding at my high school. I am located in the Monterey Bay area and i want to make my truck a trail rig but also street legal. My engine is in need of a rebuild, or a new one. If anyone could help me out it would be much appreciated. Thank you.

You probably should move up to a 22r if you can find one
Or run a 20 r also , or take your 20 r head and bolt it  up to a wary 22r block
Any way all these will bolt up and run , u just need the right distributor on the same head
Meaning " 20 r head 20 r distribrutor 22r 22r distributor " so it just bolts in to the tranny and frame
All the elctronics work just fine .... The only thing you want to keep is your alternator
This gets reused!!    I have the same truck !! Good luck

Peterbuilt 84: ya I go to north county

DFryou22

what will i have to change if i went to 22r

Nimyad

Uhh i don't think anything. If you get the 22r with a carb, intake mani, exhaust mani. Now 22re you'd have to change a lot

DFryou22

o ok is there a big difference between the 20r, 22r and 22re

DFryou22

o alright does 22r have more horsepower

86bobbedtoy

yes
and a 22re is fuel injected and has more power.

DFryou22

o ok they would all pass smog in ca right

I went there too. Graduated a couple years ago.

If your truck was set up for a 20r I would just either rebuild yours or try to find one. Performance wise 20r and 22r's are both pretty close. 22re's are fuel injected instead of carbed so you have to deal with new wiring, ecu etc. If you have the money I would just rebuild your engine.

If all the emissions stuff is hooked up and working right they all should.
