4.88 vs 5.29 (i know this ? has been asked alot)
« on: Jan 21, 2011, 08:31:28 PM »
so i have an 84 4runner with a 3 in lift and 33x10.5 KM2. Other wise shes stock. I'm currently deployed so i am going to have so spare change when i get back state side. I plan on buying complete new third members for my front and rear (plan on locking the rear). Right now I'm way under powered on the trails. i don't do anything crazy but i do come across some big rocks/hills from time to time seeing how I'm in AZ. I'm leaning towards 5.29s even though everone recommends 4.88. i don't plan on getting bigger tires any time soon but at the same time id like to only do this once. so my question is what can i expect on the trails and the road with 4.88s or 5.29s.

Thanks guys

(on a separate note anyone have any experience with the grizzly lockers? i have been searching the forms and information seems to be limited)

I would say if your going to regear the tcase in the future you could go 4.88 with a 33 tire. If you dont plan on regearing the tcase then go 5.29 even if it is a bit overkill for that size tire.

i do plan on doing dual case but not anytime soon (like next few years). i agree 5.29s are prob overkill but like i said id like to do it once plus i plan on keep this truck forever hints why im in no hurry to build it all at once.

well the only thing you will lose with the 5.29's is a little top end (higher rpm's on the highway with 33's) but for a crawler the lower the better. Just have to decide which way you want to go.

If you're going to stay with 33's 4.88 will do just fine, if you plan on running 35's and up...you're gonna want 5.29

I would go with the 5.29. everyone switches to a bigger tire at some point. just do your self the trouble and do 5.29 to start with. My buddy runs 33s with them on his DD and its not bad at all. the extra power is nice.

For off road you would be greatly appreciative of lower tcase gearing, definitly combined with lower differential gearing would be best.

With that said i have 5.29's and 37"s.  But have ran the same gears with 33"s when i first sas'd it.   I still wish i had much lower gearing offroad.

A different approch that you may consider would be spending the money on dual ultimates for the trail and looking for a set of factory 4.88's which you may be able to find for quite a bit cheaper.  Those would also be good for the road.  5.29's are nice around town but i sometimes wish i had 4.88's for the highway so my rpms were a little lower.

Where's my dead horse and my stick? :gap:

33's - 4.88's almost stock, 5.29's a little lower gearing so your rpm will be higher, now like has been said if you are going to make the change be very sure you won't end up with a larger tire, you will still be fine with 35's and 4.88's but anything above that will kill your power.

as mentioned above, with 33's...you'd fine w/ 4.88. anything bigger would be 5.29.

awsome thanks guys. first id like to say this was my first post on this form and i thank yall for the replys. i figured maybe one or two replys back becuase i know this question has been asked a million times and people get tired of answering it. Im almost positive im gonna go with 5.29s cause like one guy said "everyone gets bigger tires eventually" plus 4.88 being almost stock power with 33 isnt to impresive cause i was never 100% satisfied with the power i had before the lift and tires. thanks again guys for the input

5.29's and 35's here, you won't regret going with the 5.29's
Build it right or get off the trail
