95 4Runner 3.0 v6Transfer Case troubles
« on: Jan 16, 2011, 05:08:06 PM »
Okay, first a little background:
1995 4Runner, 3.0 V6, Automatic

I am having trouble disengaging the transfer case.  The shifter goes into 2WD and the indicator turn off, but the front DS is still turning.  We had it up on stands today and the hubs are unlocking and the wheels do not spin, but the DS is always spinning.   The shifter will still change between 4H and 4L with no problems.

If my internet research is correct, I have the VF1A transfer case and it is chain driven.  Shouldn't the DS be free when in 2WD with this setup?  Any ideas on what could be wrong?

Please don't tell em I need a new gear driven case, or that my setup sucks, I just want help.  Thanks.

i had the chain case behind a g58 in my 81, sometimes it just took a while for the case to disengage, like a mile or more. sometimes it got stuck and i had to stop and shift it into 4wd and back out again until it would go into 2wd

With the engine off and not running put the truck on jackstands and put the trans in gear.  Then try to turn the front ds by hand while the t case is in 2wd if it turns freely without turning the rear wheels than it isn't engaged.  It might be spinning but not under power or the same rate as the rear.  :dunno:  If it's still ifs might be vacuum actuation keeping the ds going.

Nimyad- I have been trying that, and we are talking days, not hours of it not engaging. Reverse, locker on and off, I have tried every situation I have available, even by hand.

Burl- I am sorry I was not clear. That is what we did. When we turned it, the rear was still turning. If we locked the hubs, we could turn the front tires and the rear would spin. We are sure it is not disengaged.

I guess my first question is this, since the all knowing internet has not told me, is the VF1A the transfer case I have or do I have the electronics activated one, I have found sources for both.

No help? Any Toyota service writers here that can verify for me? I really don't want a 1000 mechanic bill for my daily driver right now.

I have a v6 case in fresno you are welcome to it but You would need to pay for shipping if needed.  Where you at?  I don't think it would be 1000.00 bill to go that route.

Looking like 80.00 ish right now I just looked on ebay for what people are charging for shipping on these.  I'll check the UPS store on my next set of days off to get an actual price for you.  I don't know what year case I have but I'll post some pics of it so you can be sure it is what you want.

The first thing you need to do is detremine what tranny and t-case you have. Behind the autos there were two t-cases.

The A340H automatic transmission is a four–speed, Electronic Controlled Transmission with electronically
controlled 4WD transfer
, developed with the aim of producing an easy–driving 4WD vehicle.
The transfer section consists of planetary gears, hydraulic clutches and hydraulic brake. The operation of
these is fully controlled by the ECM.
The A340H transmission is mainly composed of the torque converter clutch, the overdrive (hereafter called
O/D) planetary gear unit, 3–speed planetary gear unit, 2–speed transfer, the hydraulic control system and
the electronic control system

The A340F automatic transmission is a four–speed automatic transmission with mechanically controlled
4WD transfer
, developed with the aim of producing an easy–driving 4WD vehicle. The transmission section
has fundamentally the same construction as the A340E automatic transmission mounted in the TRUCK
2WD. The operation of these is fully controlled by the ECM.
The A340F transmission is mainly composed of the torque converter clutch, the overdrive (hereafter called
O/D) planetary gear unit, 3–speed planetary gear unit, the hydraulic control system and the electronic con–
trol system.

Looking at the drawings it does not look like the T-case is a seprate unit from the tranny but I could be wrong since the FSM I am looking at is for a 93.

If the t-case that Burl has is from a manual tranny I do not think it will work.

Yeah can you post pics? I find the easiest way to tell a F from a H is by the trans oil pan or pans. An A340H has two oil pans, an A340F has one. Oops transfer case explanation is very accurate and the A340F t-case will pull off the trans no problem. Not sure about the A340H t-case removal, haven't done that yet.
I have what you need I bet here laying around. Which one do you have for sure?
