Can the front end(axle) support the weight of 5 liter 4 cylinder turbo diesel engine?
I did the SAS with a 85 front axle, 4340 chromoly inners & pro fields w/ 35" tires.
I think the engine weighs 750 lbs.

Do ya think the engine would fit in the engine compartment???

How about an adapter for thr tranny??

thanks,

Pablo

750 lbs is a bit much for even the rear. That would make for a heavy rig. You want more power with less weight.

Yup thats not the ideal cantidate for an engine swap.  While the numbers are pretty dang good the weight would kill the whole deal.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

Thanks for the advice :)

There was in 84/85 a 2lt turbo diesel, in the 4wd longbeds.  Rare but existed.  It was a 2.2L I belive.  A 5 liter sounds like was too much.  Even the 2lt made 3" springs into 1.5-2" springs pretty quick.

kyle_22r

nah, 2L is a 2.4 liter motor, the 1L is a 2.2

Hyena

Wouldn't think the Pro-fields would hold up to it.  They don't seem to hold up to the squrral power of toys.

Go with what works....4.3L V6 chevy..tons of them around. V8 would be better...I did mine with a v6..

Please see rig galley link ...click on rolled 85 4runner...lots of pics...

Hi guys,

The site is clean4x4.com

as far as the difference in weight, I doubt that the 2L2T (2446cc) is more than 100lbs heavier than a 22re.

here is a pic

always keep your mind where they can't get at it.

Run fullsize axles and the big diesel. You could get a set of 1 ton axles (Dana 60 and 14bolt) and weld them for less than the price of built up toy axles and lockers and you would never have to worry about breakage as much as with toy axles.

you guys are kill'n me with words like ,,full size and big diesel  and v-8,,I'm about to piss my pants,,thats funny :pokinit:..

Jeebus... for all that you could just go get a 3500 std cab with the 6.2 or 6.5 and chop the body...good lord!   :hammerhead:
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

Friends of mine have Dana 60's and 14bolts laying in their backyards for 1000$ a set. Gears and a detroit locker alone for a toyota will cost almost a 1000$. You will be way over a 1200$ once you add the 30 spline longs to get the strength of a dana 60, and you will still be limited by the 8" ring gear. I see alot of sweet rigs on this bulletin board and out owning the trail with fullsize axles. Why are the words "fullsize" and "bigmotor" so hated? Don't you guys like the ultimate strength of the dana 60 and the massive torque that the engine would produce in a toyota?

You would still need to gear the dana 60's, that isn't cheap either.  Steering for the dana 60 is more then the high steer of a toyota axle.  If you do fullsizes then you could have the cops on you.  dana 60's wouldn't be great for a dd.  You would also have to do something about the drivelines bolting up to the t-case.  You gotta think about all this crap when you switch to full size.

Duffil

i don't know about you guys, but I love telling people that my yota ACTUALLY USES TOYOTA AXLES!!!!!!

I'd rather spend the money and ARB front and rear than sleeper out my truck to Dana axles(even if they do make Toyota axles now...)

Duffil

I meant to included GM axles in that rant also.  Sorry.
