85 4runner **With Pics**
« on: Dec 14, 2010, 07:36:34 AM »
Well I joined the marlin fourm and I love what I have found on here so far.  I am hoping that i can contribute to some of the fourms and get my rig posted.  I am sure I can get some good feedback on the projects.  I drive an `85 4runner with a 22re.  I just got done rebuilding the motor from the ground up.  I spun a bearing and got a rod knock in the third cyl.  It took me nearly 8 months to finally get the truck back on the road.  now I just need to make it look as good as it runs.  I have also come up with some pretty sweet stuff for my truck.  I am putting on a custom fiberglass mono-leaf lift.  Tera-flex designed and built this lift for jeeps for a while and I met the guy who prototyped them.  I adapted their idea to work for the 4runner I just have to get it under the truck.  I had to get the truck running before I could worry about all the other stuff.  It also helped that while at school I was a teachers asistant in a weld shop.  So on slow days I would work on the truck, I had access to any tool to fabricate I could think of and plenty of time to do so.

:welcome: Sounds familiar. My first 22re that blow up throw the #3 rod out the side of the block. Stopped on the side of the road opened the hood and could see the crankshaft though the hole in the block. Shut the hood started it up and drove 4 miles before it died. Put a junk yard 22re in and that motor lasted only a year. So I rebuilt one myself and so far so good. Has 40,000 miles on it and still running strong. Cost a fortune though.  :turtle:

supprisingly my motor didn't cost to much.  It was a rebuilt motor and the timing chain wore a hole in the cover and dumped anti-freeze into the oil and washed the bearings.  I bought a new crank online, and used a donar motor that ran out of oil and burnt two rods and used the best 4 rods out of the two motors.  then a gasket set, some rings, and a ton of fluids.  Granted rebuilding a faily new motor sucked.

I must just like to punish myself.  Last weekend we pulled a motor and striped it down to rebuild it for my dad's 4runner.  He should be out getting parts for it today, then its back together.  Although his ideas of wheeling are very different from mine I might be able to convince him otherwise some day.

Once I get enough posts I will try and get some pictures of the project on here. i also have to track down a camera, mine went up missing in one of the several moves to and from school that I made.

Welcome!  You said you were from CO in another post.  What part of CO?  We have a pretty active CO member base.  Make sure you keep the last weekend in July open.  That's the date for the Colorado 4Runner Jamboree this year.  Here's a link to last year's event (probably the largest Toyota based event in CO).

Oh way sweet.  I think i just blew up my brand new motor yesterday so I need to get that all worked out, but that would be fun to go to the jamboree.  If anything half of wheeling is checking out other rigs and getting ideas.  I am from Kiowa, it is east of castle rock about 30 minutes or so.

This is The Slayer.  I have sence taken off the soft top and put a hard top back on.  The bushwakers are taken off and I cut the fenders out.  The paint is a constant battle, becasuse of the many layers of crappy paint it has to be sanded down to the primer for anything to stick to it.

The new inner tub.  I did have to cut the seats so they would fit back in.  I was re-apholstering them anyways so I was not to hartbroke about cutting them apart, I will get pictures of that on here.  I need to find a digital camera.

My brother helped weld in the new rear fenders and some work on the front fenders.  I told him to not get it to hot so it wouldn't warp the sheet metal, and he got it to hot and warped the sheet metal.  So as I am sanding the old paint off I have been trying my hand at body work.  It is a wheeling truck so I am not worried about it being perfect but I dont want it looking like an old soda can.  So the lesson learned...use a tig welder next time so it wont warp as bad, and I also threw away the old fenders that had the mounts for the seat, role bar mounts and seatbelt mount on it.  I should have cut them off and rerused them.

An old soft top, makes a great pattern for a new one.  I used my old Kayline for a pattern, and convinced my wife to sew me up a new one.  I added side zippers, so the panels can come off instead of rolled up.

That is what i was going to do with mine.  Do you remember where you got your fabric and stuff from?  I have not looked into it to much yet, but I would imagine finding some quality waterproof fabric that will hold up will he hard.
