Found a screaming deal, + I got a rear axle guestion.
« on: Jan 05, 2005, 03:42:50 PM »
And now a short story.  Went in to a local junkyard today to look for a third member to rebuild.  I asked if they had any four wheel drive Toyota parts, mostly axle parts.  He said yea I got two of them over there.  They had an 89 4-cyl rear end and a 80-83 front end, complete except for 1 locking hub.  I asked how much for the thirds.  He said, well I dont want to sell just the thirds.  I said I'd give him $40 each and I would pull them.  He said he would be right back and he would see what kind of deal he could make me.  He went inside for about 10 minutes then came back out and said "I'll sell you both complete axles for $100, $50 each."  Done deal.  So now I got two axles for $107.25!!!

The Question I have is about the 89 rear end.  One of the lower bolts that holds the third member in is unusually long.  Is this typical of 89 and up rear ends?  Is this pumpkin the same as the 79-88 pumpkins I usually deal with?  I was going to put this in a front axle so what needs to be done to do this?  Just put a longer stud in the front housing?  Any info apreciated.

I am guessing, but is it maybe a V6 rear? I think they will work, but you will need to clearance the housing to install the third member and of course change the stud. I would wait to see what others have to say before taking my opinion to hart.

Good luck

That is a screaming deal by the way. The yards around here get $300.00 for rear and $500.00 for a front.

Im almost positive its not a V-6.  I had a V-6 out of a 92 runner before and it had more ribs on the case.  This one has the same number of ribs as the front 83 third.  I dont remember that V-6 one having that one long bolt though,  I ran the V-6 in a front axle also.  I think I would have noticed that putting it in.

Some of the 3rd gen trucks have a thicker 3rd housing and use a rather long stud to retain the 3rd.  My 94 was like that.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

one of the studs is longer.
there is a thick section on the third that the stud goes through.
i think it is just for alignment purposes so you dont guess it one stud off.
the normal length studs are long enough to go through it, just not as much thread sticks through.

Is the thick section of the housing where the long stud is located at notched? Wondering if the housing was set up for an electic locker but one wasn't installed at the factory. Or the electric locker was R&R with an open diff at a later time for some reason?

its not a really thick section. it just like a 1/8" thicker around one stud.
its normal on all the third members.

its one of the bottom drivers side stud holes on the third.

If the flange is about 5/16" thick in most places its an earlier housing.  If its about 3/8" its a later model.

When I get home Ill take a side by side pic for ya.  I didnt think there was any difference either till I started stripping the 94.  I did notice that the hi-pinion diff has the same thickness flange.

hhmmm thats odd.
seems that would mess up the axle alignment by 1/16 of an inch if you put either one in the older/newer housings. :headscratch:
dont know if 1/16 would be enough to cause a problem.
they all use the same gear set? hell even the v-6 can use the 4cyl gears with a ring gear spacer.
you can fit the v-6 gears in the 4cyl third by mix matching pinion bearings/races.

i guess 1/16 isnt enough of a difference to cause a problem over the whole span of the axle though.

but anyways the long stud is supposed to be there.
and you shouldnt need to put a different stud in the front to bolt the third in.

I thought that toyota axles had 2 longer studs, one on top and one on bottom.  I think the third also had the thicker part for those 2 studs also.

Here is a little more info on the axle.  The long stud is located on the bottom side near the pinion and it is not just slightly longer, it is about 2 1/2 inches long.  I was told it was out of an 89 and had 3.07 gears by the guy at the wrecking yard.  3.07?  I just thought he didnt know wtf he was talking about.  As I looked at the third closer I noticed that the bulge on the outside of the third that is around the pinion area is quite a bit larger than the other toyota axles I have?  Large pinion? 3.07gears?  Maybe?  I will crack it open this weekend and see what gears it really has.  The axle housing has wider spring perches.  Same distance apart, but its like they are made for a 2 1/2 spring or something?  I dont have a digi camra or I would post a pic.  Has any one seen anything like this?

The real late model axles have a wider perch.  Its actually around 3" wide.  The dude must have been smoking some good stuff as ive never heard of 3.07's in a yota.

WT is correct. The later model 3rd's have a thicker flange than the early models. I think they changed around 89'. Don't worry though, it will work in your housing with no problems. Slap it in there and give er' hell !!

Also, I've never heard of 3.07's :dunno:
