First off the Altenator does not hold a charge. :gap:

There should be a wire running to the battery make sure it is intact, also check the grounds to the motor, altenator and the battery for a good solid connection. Grounds are the usual suspects.

alt fuse under the dash, if charge light is ON then do a voltage check to the batt ,if good unplug the batt, if this doesent kill the motor then you look at the voltage reg..... there are some fuse links on the drivers side behind the head light hit these connections,  unplug replug and make sure your hot wire going to the alt is good and on there , this is the way i rule out my alt, works every time ..... oh yeah and all the GROWNDS going to the block fire wall ect....hope this helps your volts.!!

Had the same problem; saw in a thread there's a "Charge Lamp Relay" in the driver's fuse block... worth a check. Be prepared if you go buy a new one, Auto Zone wanted like $60 for one and had to order it. Also are your CHARGE and BRAKE lights on in the dash? Might mean something more; turns out a bunch of wires on my 84 were kinda melted so that was my issue.

Among many, many other things  :beerchug:

I have an extra, not 100% sure if it works; if I can find my FSM I'll test it and get back with you. If you go to a junk yard, it's an 84 ONLY relay; nothing else looks/fits the same. Trust me, I checked out about 50 84 and newer trucks with no luck.
