Turbo Runner build on 42 tsl's
« on: Nov 14, 2010, 05:27:28 PM »
Well I've been in the newbie section for quite some time. It's about time I started a build thread even though my runner is almost done. I started out with a bone stock 1986 runner with a rebuilt 22re and white walled tires. I did a SAS with an '85 front axle and wrangler springs and 35's. The next step was AA duels and Allpro 3' buggy springs, and 38.5 baja claws. The AA duels kept popping out of gear and was pretty scary.
The next phase was an E-locked hi pinion from a fzj80 land cruiser and a welded v6 rear with 4:88 gears. I also bought some Bobby long shafts, hub gears, ARP hub studs and vented rotors with the ifs calipers. Here is a pic of the old set up.

I've since added a 12500 T-max winch and custom front bumper and a rear bumper with a swing out tire carrier.

Phase 3

Built 22ret with the following

punched .20 over with forged pistons

molly rings

eagle rods

crank turned .10 under

heavy duty bearings

line bored mains and cylinders

balanced and blue printed

R151F with an ACT 1800lb clutch and Marlin duels.

forged 23 spline input and Bobby long output.

and of coarse the cheap Ebay turbo.(big mistake but more on that later)

42' TSL super swamper's

taco rear with a detroit locker

Now I have also bobbed the rear 10 inches and built my own soft top, For the rear I put in some pro comp 4'  springs out of an 89-94 truck and moved the shackle mounts back. I cut the fire wall all the way to the body mount and did the same to the rear.

Now about that cheap Ebay turbo, Well they suck! You get what u pay for. When I first put it on I didn't put on an oil restricter at the high pressure side of the oil line. It feeds the turbo too much oil and it gets past the seals and it leaks into the exhaust side of the turbo and it smokes like a chimney. I have since put on my buddies cheap turbo with the fitting and it stopped it for a while. But she's smoking again. A month ago I ordered a t3/t4 Garrett turbo and this should fix it once and for all. I've been running 15lbs of boost and it hauls a$$. Even with the 42's it would smoke my '97 Z-71 chevy 0-60 no joke! And yes since the pics I've cleaned up the engine bay wiring.

Thanks guys! It's been a dream of mine for quite awhile now, And It's almost done. I forgot to mention I drilled and tapped my box and used a TG ram. That saved me from bending my right front springs. I bent 3 pairs!

Things still left to do..

Put some rears up front and get rid of the allpro 3' buggy springs that are  badly bent and never did flex like they said they would.

finish the tub job in the back the duck tape and card board worked for our local top truck challenge but... it's hack

I need to install  my new turbo and redo the exhaust now It's 3' instead of the 2 1/2 at the turbo.

fix the fuel gauge that stopped working 1 day after the wiring transplant from the turbo donor truck.

I need a new winch controller. I kicked it with my foot getting out of the truck to lock in the winch during the frame twister.
I finished 5th. Would of done better if I had of finished the frame twister. Not too bad considering that was the first time I had wheeled the truck since all of the mods. I don't know how to do a direct link but if you get on youtube type in top truck challenge bozeman mt 2010 there is some video of my truck. she was smoking a lot but it was fun! I walked the rocks and had never been on them before, my spotter rocked.
The rock run got deleted by accident, too bad there was a huge hole at the end and had 2 big  boulders that you had to straddle to get out. I had the front end at least 3 feet in the air. I beat the crap out of her and never broke anything. There is more pics on the Montana 4wheel drive association's web sight under the mountaineers link for bozeman .

What sort of engine management are you using for the turbo? I'm always thinking about boosting my engine "just because".

I'm using the stock 22rte computer and injectors. I turned the afm 5 clicks and I live 4600 ft above sea level so the stock injectors are fine. If you want to boost your non turbo  you could get away with 5-7 lbs of boost as the stock turbo trucks had cast pistons stock. I would use some stock turbo injectors and an MSD box to retard the timing. You will have to use the highest octane fuel you can get to keep detonation at bay because of your compression. Get on 22rtetrucks.com  for more info on this swap.

Well it's 5 below right now and I braved the cold and pulled off my oil return line from the block and turbo. The fittings I made were half inch. The stock fittings are 3/4. Now normally that would be fine but the hose I had the local tractor supply store make necked way down by the compression fitting. So back to the drawing board on that. I'm glad i asked the boys on the 22rtetrucks.com board what was going on. they have helped me out a lot. So add that to the top of my list of things to do.

Well it has finally warmed up a bit here in Montana and I have done some more work to the runner. I put in some seats, the old ones were nasty. I clocked the turbo so the oil drain is straight down and made a 3/4 inch return line.(no smoke even with the cheap flebay turbo)Woo hoo!! I also got the right wire harness for the back of the truck and put it in. Now my fuel gauge works. I made some mud flaps to keep the fuzz off my back. I just need tabs and insurance to drive it!!

Sweet; I have always wondered why Yota didn't stick an intercooler on the trucks. All the cars got ICs; why not trucks? WTF?

Oh, and define "need tags" to drive it... isn't Montana still kinda "wild-west" in parts?

I could snap some more pics of the fender trimming. I still need to finish the rear wheel wells. I have no heat in my garage and it's winter 9 months of the year here.
I need to license the truck. I drove it into Bozeman last year for our top truck challenge and have not driven her on the street since.
I still have a bunch of stuff to do. It's ready for our next local event the hill in a hole mud bog Ala Florida style. In September it will be time for Top Truck again.

Ya there is a couple on youtube. It was at our top truck challenge in bozeman MT 2010. The one in the frame twister was cool. She was smoking like a chimney. I have since fixed that. I have learned soo much about turbo's on this build.

There was some 49.5 inch holes that Mike dug with his bronco at the beginning. When I jumped out of the truck I caught the winch controller with my foot and ripped the wires out of the remote. Sucks because I would have gotten 4th place if I could have finished the frame twister. Not bad considering it was my first time wheelin' the truck with the turbo motor.

Well I traded my 42' TSL's for 5 42' IROKS! The IROKS have 95% tread left on em and will do much better in the snow. Now will be a good time to install my staun bead locks. As an added bonus the IROKS are a lot lighter. 95 lbs compared to 107 for the tsl's. That's almost 50lbs of rotating mass. I drove it into town today and man this thing is fun to drive!! 16lbs of boost is such a blast.

Thanks. The bumpers are kinda old school, but I really hate the look of tube bumpers. They show too much of the core support. I should be getting my new tires next week. They won't be on the truck for awhile, installing the stauns take some time. Plus I'm doing a lot of side work this summer. I have a '67 mustang in the garage with a nice sized dent in it. I just painted a chevy work truck and now will have enough cash for a new motor that's going in my super clean '83 hilux. As soon as I get the new tires on I will be posting some pics. I have a little over a month before the mud bogs and it will be ready.
