33x10.50 Tires and 5.29 Gears for DD
« on: Nov 02, 2010, 02:05:29 PM »
Good afternoon. I am re-gearing my 85 Toyota pickup with a 5 speed tranny and 22RE. I ordered 4.88 gears but am having second thoughts about getting 5.29 gears. I’ll have two sets of tires, 33x10.50 AT types for DD (less wear and tear) and 35x12.50 MT for off road. Question I have is; how bad would the 5.29’s be with the 33’s for DD? Mostly driving around town and not a whole lot of highway driving. If anyone is running or experienced with this setup as a DD I’d appreciate any feedback.  I’m good on the off road numbers and that is why I want to get the 5.29’s. I do have a 4.7 to 1 transfer case so the 4.88’s will be good but the 5.29’s would be better Thanks in advance.

It'll do great around town.  I ran 4.88's with worn 32's for a while... about the same as 33's and 5.29's.  For around town with some freeway driving, the low gears weren't an issue.  I drove the truck east on I-40 and I-75 from west TN to Tellico.  That 22RE was wound pretty tight at interstate highway speeds.

I'd stick with the 4.88's since you'll be running the 33's for DDing, and have the 4.7:1 gears for the trail.  Just my  :twocents:

Thanks, I may get 34" or 35" AT for DD if I get the 5.29's.

I did meaty 33s with 5.29s and my commute was all highway. I thought it revved a bit high for the long distance. Around town it was great, I hardly used 1st and it had some pep!

If your going to run 35s after your 33s wear out, go with the 5.29s.

I ran 32's and 5.29s as a DD for 3 years and it was no prob. 65 @3000 RPM and would make long up hill pulls a breeze.

Ive had a mixed experience with 5.29s the are good around town and on the trail running 35s. The also are ok on the highway at 60 mph. But when i hit long uphill runs like heading up the 4 lane highway to urshem i cannot go faster than 35 mph, it just bogs down. Ive seen numerous people run 4.88s with 35s and be totally fine!

What gear are you in? Their probably in 3rd pulling it in the high revs. I use to get up the 4 lane on 33s and 4.30 and I'd be pulling 3rd at like 45mph.

Thats a power issue. Not gearing.

im in 3rd gear up the 4 lane and itll start to overheat if i get about 40 mph. My engine might be screwed up somehow then because my buddy has the same exact setup as me except he doesnt have a 4.7 crawl box and he said he cruises in 4th goin about 47mph or so!

Oh ya well (ha ha had to:) i run 5.29's and 37" tires and do just fine in town and up hill and on the highway. I have the 22re and can go 75 mph on highway which gets a little sketchy and it slows to bout 55 or 60 on most hills! In town i leave rubber all over the place, LOL. But far as you go i would run the 4.88's wit the 33's for sure but if ya step to the 35's your gonna want the 5.29's cause you will notice a power loss. A big power loss if ya drive around at 8 PSI like i tend to do sometimes. Mine is not much of a daily driver but it could be i just don't..

Thanks for the replies. I am going 5.29's and 35's. This truck is going to be more of a trail rig sooner than later, plus I have a couple of vehicles that I can use to DD. It just feels unnatural driving the car or the wife's SUV.
