QuoteROSEVILLE - Police have a suspect in custody after a standoff and fire at the Westfield Galleria at Roseville, but the danger isn't over. A new plume of black smoke was pouring out of the roof, but firefighters were being kept from going inside because of a backpack the man left behind and the possibility of an explosive device.

A police spokesman said bomb technicians were getting ready to move into place and examine the backpack. The man who's been arrested did not make any bomb threat, but he claimed to be carrying a gun, according to police.

For more than two hours, smoke was pouring from the roof of the mall, even though sprinklers were activated inside. Division Fire Chief Dennis Matheson said crews have yet to get close to the fire because the bomb squad has not given the all-clear signal.

Lincoln Fire Chief Dave Whitt said crews are battling the flames from outside the mall.

A person at the scene told News10 there is significant flooding on the first floor.

Mall Evacuated

The mall was evacuated Thursday morning after a man started a fire inside an electronics store on the second floor, then barricaded himself.

A man who was speaking incoherently went into the GameStop store around 10:30 a.m., according to the Roseville Police Department. Store employees told police the man started a fire in the store and he claimed to be armed.

Police say the man barricaded himself in an area just outside the store, and started several other fires before he was arrested.

Investigators were still working to confirm the identity of the suspect. A detective said the man would be charged with arson, though additional charges may be filed.

A police spokesman said there were no reports of hostages or injuries during the standoff. As far as reports of gunfire, the spokesman said an officer used a "non-lethal device" to break a window, but no shots were fired.

Matheson said Placer County sheriff's deputies, Roseville police officers, firefighters and paramedics were on high alert at the mall.

The roof collapsed a little bit ago...

Kinda sad considering how many jobs are being lost right before the holidays.

Unbelievable, they let the place burn because of a backpack. Not saying that this guy was a terroist but they (the real terroists) are eating this up, just start a fire and leave a bag somewhere and we'll just let the place burn to the ground, with this type of thinking we will loose the terrorism war.  :shake:

this all just makes me laugh.

I can see the future.....
no personal bags allowed in malls?
bomb sniffing dogs?
check point at entrances?

Honestly I always thought a terrorist would bomb a mall.
think about it, small area lots of people, it fits there criteria.

its just gonna get worse people,
I personally dont care, I just want a good future for my daughter.

admittedly a mall is a great target. However this guy was just a disgruntled former worker, not a terrorist.

The odd thing is I watched the news this morning and they never even got to the backpack. It's under the debris from the roof that collapsed. So the question is, they waited to fight the fire because the bomb squad was going in to ensure the backpack wasn't a bomb then allow access to the firefighters. But if the backpack hasn't been touched they basically wasted "X" amount of hours to start fighting the fire?!

Doesn't make any sense to me.....

There's a huge hole in the roof on the north end of the mall.

Personally the only reason I ever went there is when my wifed dragged me or to eat at Cheesecake Factory. I feel more for the 1000+ people who are out of work right now.

Yeah, in all seriousness, that does suck. I know a couple girls that work there.

That's the easy way to look at it. But ya gotta consider the jobs lost and the fact that a large percentage of Rocklin's city revenue comes from the Mall. Doesn't help it's right before the holidays :(

But, actually reading his entire quote, how much is a life worth?

The mall will most likely make accomodations, and you'd be surprised to see how quickly it gets repaired.
Some people may be out of work for a bit, but it is certainly better than losing a single life.

I knew they have Mohels in Israel...but, I thought they were more advanced than to have malls.

I think most malls are created in such a fashon to be able to do that, they probably just closed of the section that burned and the rest can reopen once they restore the power and water supplies.
