Which Bench seats work?
« on: Oct 16, 2010, 11:36:19 PM »
Alright so my 87 has Bucket seats.

The gf has convinced me to get a bench seat as she wants to ride center with me.
I have has a solid bench seat before and they just suck cause you can't move the driver and pass side independently.

So to comprimise, my question is which Split Bench seats will work?
I don't care which vehicle brand, all that matters is that they will bolt my cab with no or minor modifications.

Make? Model? Year?
my thought to look for are Isuzu's, Ranger's, BII's, Mazda's, Nissan's, Newer Model 3rd gen trucks?, 95-04 Tacos?

A little help?
If anyone has done so, let me know.

Depends on how many miles are on the seats, and how well the interior was maintained.  The 60/40's in my  '90 have 185k+ on them and the drivers is still in good shape, no sag at all.  I have owned it since it was new and had put custom seat covers on it '94.   On the other hand my '91 had about 210k miles on it when I got it, it had spent the last 10yrs of its life as a winery truck, no seat covers and the seats were shot to hell, both of them, which is unusual.  This set I put in tan '86 I restored in '07 seamed to be a middle of the road, not covered, but taken good care of.  W/210k on the odo and w/the exception of a crack in the plastic head rest coating, and a small tear in the vinyl by the back adjuster, the seats were a still solid.

The 3rd gens are little wider than the 2nd gens, but the seats still fit, just less room between them and the doors, than w/the 2nd gen seats.  As with most import seat swaps, the outer mounts line up, the inner front does as well(if set-up for buckets), and the inner rear mount lines up w/the seat belt bolt.  IIRC, I used the seat belt bolt for both the belt and the seat mount.  In order for the seats to sit level, you will have to raise the outer rear mount a little, about 3/8-1/4" if I remember correctly, which seams to be common for most bucket seat swaps, at least those that I have done in the 2nd gens.

A set of 1st gen Tacoma seats should still fit about the same, I can't comment on any other manufacturer seats.

Skip the bench and just have her sit in your lap.

X2, I haven't seen a set yet that didn't have the arm rest.

Another option if you happen to come across one, is the bench seat bottom w/bucket seat backs.  I am not sure how long Toyota produced them, this one is in an '87.

The seats in my '02 taco would be perfect for what you need.  The left and right side slide independently of each other and it has a fold down armrest with a storage compartment in it.  I think these only came in 2wd extra cabs - at least that's what mine is.

Good option! maybe I can make one with my stock buckets?

Thats what I'd really like! but tacoma parts up here are hard to come by.

79-95 toyotas and 88-97 rangers are a dime a dozen.

My '82 came with (I think)  Honda Accord seats from an unknown year and I absolutely HATE them  :reg: They do not let the back forward and it's a pain in the  :moon: to access anything behind the seats in my single cab.

Almost all accord seats even 4 doors lean forward some what. Probably not enough though. Get 2 door integra buckets they are the best.

Deffinatelly the easiest swap would be the 90s model excab seats as they will bolt in and are the right width...
