Rough Idle after Dist. Cap, rotor, plug wires replaced
« on: Oct 05, 2010, 01:40:49 PM »
My buddy tried to replace his distributor cap, rotor and plug wires and now his '88 4runner wont idle. We double checked the wires to make sure they were plugged in right and we even took the new stuff off and put the old cap, rotor, and plug wires back on and it still won't idle. The engine sounds fine if he keeps the throttle open though. It also ran fine before he decided to do this.

Could you have accidentally knocked the vacuum advance hoses off the distributor?

check the plugs, you might have cracked one while yanking the boots off.

Since we don't have carbs, we don't have the vacuum advance diaphram

I have an '85 p/u with 22re and when we compared how my stuff was connected to the his is connected everything seemed to be the same. There is a plug at the bootom of the dist cap but there wasn't any vac. hoses running to or from the the dist cap.

The only vac hose he didn't have that I do have is the one coming from the throttle cable with the little filter on it. After reading more in the haynes manuel could it be the Air Gap with in the dist. cap? The problem with that is the manuel says that to fix the air gap buy a new dist cap.

I'm going with firing order being wrong.

His old plug wires were numbered and we also compared how my plug wires are connected to the way his were/are and they are the same. I guess its worth a shot but I'm also wondering if he torqued the plugs to tightly and damaged one of them. And by "firing order" you do mean the way the plug wires are connected right?

This is how we have the wires run from the cap:
13 on top
24 on bottom

and then the coil wire in the center of the dist. cap

We'll check the plugs tomorrow and see. Its just kinda weird b/c he changed the plugs last week and didn't have the problem until today, but he did say he may have torqued them to much.

This will help if you don't have the torque specs:

Also make sure they are gapped correctly, and that a piece of crud didn't find its way between the electrodes.

X2 on the firing order being wrong. You got a wire crossed somewhere.

Well everything was hooked up correctly. No wires were crossed. Apparently he took his intake tube off in the process and ended up cracking it and that was the culprit. :smack:

Until you suck that tape through  :ack:  Better to fix it better if you can't replace it, like with fiberglass matt and resin.
