Case blowing gear oil
« on: Oct 21, 2002, 03:29:20 PM »
My rear case is blowing gear oil out of what looks like the top around the shifter access cover...this only happens after about 50 mi or so, is this vented in some way?... the manual shows nothing vent wise, someone said the vent nut may be loose and causes this, if it has such an item where is it cause I am blind and do not see it. I got this as a bolt in unit and do not know if it has a oil deflecter seal on it, that I will check, but I dont think that would stop it from coming out like a broken dam...
This is happening at freeway speeds and not so much when crawling....
Any ideas for me that I need to look at?

Did you check the deflector is in with the little rolled edge down? Is it overfilled ? It will normally throw "some" oil up there at speed. Top boot on?

Access cover? I think now I am not sure of location. The case is leaking up through the shifter base, passing the stick and coming out the top of the shifter base??? Or "boot area"???

No it is coming out along the gasket area, the oil deflector has a gasket on each side and mine are new. I remove it all today and redid the gaskets on both sides of the deflector, its the only thing left to do...I hope it fixes it...
Do these reduction boxes vent any other way?

Depending on the setup they vent different ways. An MC07 vents through the rear case. Generally if it shares oil it will vent.

mine does the same thing, but it's more like it might come through the shifter around the ball of it?

Does your shift light indicator plug have a gasket on it?

Are the two 6mm shift-spring/detent-ball retaining Hex Bolts properly installed with sealer?

Is it one of our billet Aluminum shift bases? If so, are the pins sealed up with silicone?

You said that your shifter base and oil slinger were both properly sealed and installed, but are BOTH gaskets present? And are they used gaskets or new? We hate the factory gaskets (two of them up their) and we never ever use them. We just clean the surfaces with brake cleaner and then install a thin coating of silicone on the top of the t/case and the bottom of the shifter base -- not on the oil slinger -- then put the oil slinger atop the t/case and then the base atop the oil slinger -- -- Of course this all being that it is leaking from there?

Is it a tall case -- 1984-1995 -- but bolted up to a cast iron transmission -- L-series, 1979-1983? If so if you use the short case gasket on a tall case, then it could leak out the mismatched gasket t/case-transmission combo.
This is the same for the opposite, if you run a short case -- 1979-1983 -- on a tall transmission -- all aluminum trans 1984-1995 -- and using a short gasket with the short t/case housing might not provide enough sealing surface between the two mismatched t/case-transmission.

Oh Just some guesses......
