ARB Compressor blowing fuse
« on: Feb 13, 2012, 12:41:23 PM »
Posted on another forum, but also want to try here.

So I have a 93 toyota pickup. Has an ARB rear air locker run by the ARB compressor. Have had it set up for around 5 years and used it lightly without any problems of popping the fuse (had other problems but thats a different story). Cant be wired incorrectly as I would have been having problems for the last 5 years. Now all the sudden its giving me fits.

First try, it filled the tank, then I hit the locker switch to drive in the driveway back and forth. Also hit the switch a few times to make sure the soleniod was working and relasing the air ( the little "phew" noise). Fuse blew on the 3rd time I think.

Last two attemps of putting a new 30 amp fuse it starts up, runs for about a minute to fill the small built in tank, stops for a second, then trys to kick over again where the fuse then pops and gives a little spark. Did that exact thing twice.

Any ideas? Has 12.5 volts going to the connection once I put the fuse. Soon as I plug the other side of the connection to the compressor, it runs for that 45sec-minute and then does the quit-restart-pop.

Its got a short, or a bad connection

I thought maybe and it still might. Although I traced the wires all the way from the battery to the  fuse connection and didnt notice anything out of the ordinary.  the only connection after that is the 6 inchs or so that goes to the compressor.  When I put the fuse in, it gives me the 12.5 volts.

If there was a short or bad connection, would I still get the 12.5 volts to that point?   Then once I plug the remaining 6 inches of wire, will it run that long with a short?

A short, yes, bad connection, maybe, as it runs it heats up, could cause it to change how it reacts to things. But it could be heating up( the motor) and the motor then expands from heat and creates a short in the motor

I made a really crappy video (couple of reasons why its crappy but wont get into) to try and explain whats going on.

So your saying that the short might be inside the pump motor itself?  ie the only way to fix is to get a new compressor?

hope you guys can see it

Or you could re wire it to the battery real fast, with all new wires and see

well that stinks.  Guess I need a new compressor which doesnt make me all that happy since it really hasnt seen that much use even though Ive had it for a while.

Bobby-how old was the one you had sent back for your friend?  Mine is prolly 5+ years old.  Not sure if they will do anything for that?

We didn't even have to send the old one back, they just sent a new one based on the serial number, we didn't provide anything other than the serial number he had had his for 3 years but he said one to them, then he realized later that he was way off.
