as some of you know my rig is on 40s, I got 5:29's and I'm open front and rear, but I was wondering if you guys could give me some sugestions, would a spool hold up to the abuse(considering my tire size), it's not a daily driver. any sugestions are greatly appreciated. thanx

Are you nuts?  A tow rig with a spool in the rear?  Thats gonna be an axle eating sob if ya ever try and turn with a load.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

yoderboy

a spool should hold up just fine. its the ring-pinion and birfeilds that'll break imo

Me thinks WT is conflused

Oh and BTW I think a spool will hold a lot better than any locker would....and If you breack U-Joints....dont blame the spool blame the 3 dollar U-joints u buy :joke:

If you drive it hard you will proly break rear axles.

:psss: This was in 1986 back when you were still crappin' in your britches and FYI it was a $4.00 U-joint the $2.50 ones would break in less than 2 days.

For some reason I was thinking it said tow rig :smack:  Hell Id run a spool with 44's with no hesitation, so I cant see an issue with it on 40's

Yeah since sooooooooooooooooo many people are going to be looking inside your axle housing.  :stopit:

:shakehead: But if you weld it you can't unweld it..... :psss:  in case you decide you don't like it.

cgbemis

Who cares if you can't un-weld the diff. You can't un-spool a spool either. So what. I'd personally rather have it welded up by someone I knew was a competent welder, that run a spool. First off it's cheaper, and second of all, I have seen spools deflect under 37" tire usage, let alone 40's. With welded diffs, it seems that either they hold up, or they brake. They don't usually deflect.

Uhh......I think 86runner just called me ghetto....dude

i just kight have. i got my spool today. pure beef

The reason I wont run a spool is that they will deflect under load and in extreme cases they will actually bend.  Once its bent its junk.  On the other hand weldin a stock carrier is just like a spool with huge gussets on it so it can not bend.  Thats why I dont run them.

KYOTA

Have you seen this 'deflection' in our application or are you talking about 5000 hp top fuelers?

Skinny_Pedal

so then can u tell me that welding has no problems either?

WHITE_TRASH

If you overheat the carrier it will warp.  If you weld the carrier and cool it to quickly it will warp as well.  I just take my time and weld it solid and never look back.

And no Kyota I havent seen any deflecting beings the case will usually deflect first.

you dont need 5000 hp when you have low gears and wheels bound up in some rocks.
they can deflect, but i have only heard of one person having a problem with losing a gearset because of it.

KYOTA

I'd think the gears would be the first to go if there was any deflection in the spool (like Derek said). I run a dual ultimate and a spool in the rear no problems here . I think I remeber seeing that on PBB anybody remember? link?

KYOTA

Found some old threads on PBB, basically a toss up, sounds like the spools that did fail were the thinner flange ones. BUT I did see a post where Gearman said any carrier will flex. So a welded 3rd is capable of deflecting and shearing teeth too, granted probably not as easy beings the part of the carrier that houses the side and spider gears on an open 3rd is closer to the ring gear mounting flange than is with the center of a spool. I'm not worried about it, and if I ever do nuke my spool I'll be sure to post the carnage pics. Now watch the next time I go out I'll break it.

slowroller

If you weld the carrier you run the chance of it exploding under a load while 4 wheeling hard ! been there done that ! now a spool if it is good stuff will hold up pretty well, but remember you get what you pay for if you lucky.
