Found some old threads on PBB, basically a toss up, sounds like the spools that did fail were the thinner flange ones. BUT I did see a post where Gearman said any carrier will flex. So a welded 3rd is capable of deflecting and shearing teeth too, granted probably not as easy beings the part of the carrier that houses the side and spider gears on an open 3rd is closer to the ring gear mounting flange than is with the center of a spool. I'm not worried about it, and if I ever do nuke my spool I'll be sure to post the carnage pics. Now watch the next time I go out I'll break it.
:yesnod: Yep you put your mouth on it.... ya might as well start lookin in to gettin a new one

Yes, I've had two rear ring and pinions go out due to spool deflection.  One in the Old Bus, one in this one.  This one is Formula Toy #006, Ultimate Crawler, 37's, 4.10 axle gears.
Have you seen this 'deflection' in our application or are you talking about 5000 hp top fuelers?

If you weld the carrier you run the chance of it exploding under a load while 4 wheeling hard!

If you have a diff welded by a competent welder, it shouldn't be a serious issue.

what is deflection?

Say you have a tire wedged, your trying to get it and your not making forward progress, the force that is being applied to the gears has to go somewhere so the pinion in essence pushes (deflects) the ring gear away, the contact pattern of the gears is now too far up on the ring gear teeth and causes failure.
