55 inch taco rear springs on a 1st gen pickup
« on: Sep 08, 2010, 09:56:09 PM »
Hey everyone! I'm looking into doing a home built rear spring setup on my 86 pickup so i can ditch the crappy 4 inch pro comp lift springs that ride and flex like poo.
What i had in mind is a set of rear 3 leaf 1998 rear taco springs without a overload helper that are 55 inch eye to eye, 24 inch front eye to pin, 31 inch rear eye to pin. I was going to use a jonny joint shackle hanger moved about 3 inches back, A new front hanger moved about 4 inches forward, a 6 inch rear shackle. I'm looking for at least 4 inches of lift from what ever i do with the rear at min.  So if needed i was going to pull the very bottom leaf out of the taco pack and use the very top leaf cut down out of my old 4 inch lift spring pack to give the spring more arch and lift. What I'm trying to find out is has anyone done a similar swap with good results? I already have the taco springs, shackles, spring hangers, and jonny joints and only have 125 bucks in all of it. I'm ballin on a budget so I'm trying to keep the cost down as much as poss. I really want a nice soft flexy rear setup to match my front so I'm not always hiking a rear tire everywere lol. Any input would b great!

dont ditch the "load leaf"  because it keeps axle wrap to a minimum  AND will keep the spring from going too negative

Now that u said that it would b a good idea to leave the overload on them. i dont think they will hurt me much anyways since the stock taco overload isant flat its curved down on both sides. i got my shackles, front hangers, rear jonny joints, spring pins, 4 degree shims, shock mounts, and hardware today so maybe by the middle of next week i can start workin on it.my only other questin is what is the best rear shackle angle to run on these trucks for the best flex and ride?

Some of the early stock Taco springs were prone to breakage.
