Building a new patio cover, pics
« on: Jul 03, 2010, 03:47:57 PM »
Me and a friend of mine are building a patio cover in my backyard right now. I'd like to do something decorative maybe some big lag bolts and washers...

This is what I've found so far that I like but can't find what they're called.

Any other idea's pic's would be great, I'll probably be purchasing everything tomorrow.

Just a quick visual... the 4 vertical post's are 6"x6"x10' dark mahogany stained douglas fur.

Horizontal supports are going to be 6"x"8"x20' and the ridge will be made out of 4"x8"x16' with some 2"x4" in the middle of the 4"x8" for support and something to attach the roofing too. Should look pretty nice when it's done. We got the 4 posts stained and set in concrete today. Tomorrow hope to start early and get most of the roof support done.

I'll post pic's as we progress.

I don't know what those washers are called, but I've seen them used extensively in the marine industry, so you may have a starting point there, maybe acme rigging  :dunno:

Nice to know you have a nate sized pool for me to kick it in if I come visit  :gap:

Thanks!

So today we didn't get much done because the wife and I took our daughter to the Zoo. Didn't get home until around 3 pm... took a trip to lowes and sams club which killed 3 more hours so by the time we got back we just stained what we already had up there with the new gun.

This rough cut doug fir sucks up the stain like crazy. We're already 3 gallons in and we've only done what you see in the pictures. It still probably needs another coat!  ha...

Tomorrow i'm not screwing around, gonna go with 5 gallons. hopefully that'll be enough for the 12 4X8's that we're using for rafters... and the 2X4's that'll be the cross bracing inbetween the 4X8's

Too late now...but if you seal soft wood first, it won't take as much stain and it will be a more even tone.

we finished the framing today, here's a little teaser.. we actually got quite a bit further then the picture today but I just snapped a quick one for progress..

my buddies coming over tomorrow to tape everything off and stain it... i'll be at work until 7:00.. when I get home I plan on getting 3 or 4 bags of concrete on the post's just to get them level with the ground.

After the stain sets a day or so we'll be putting on the roof and installing a few fan's.

I scored a large play set for my daughter today off craigslist. It goes for $1000 new off Lowes web site (I didnt shop around)  but I found it for $300 bucks... ended up getting it for $250. I'll post pic's when I pick it up tomorrow after work.

It's got the two swing sets, see-saw swing, slide and rock wall with a cover. The wood has been weathered slightly but nothing major.. and all the hardware/cover look brand new.

got the roof done today, major PITA... and i'm burnt to a crisp

I really like the black backing of the roof material against the color of the stain.

We got the electrical ran but I dont have it tied into the attic yet.... gonna wait until we get the fan's set into place.

That looks sweet man, nice work. I agree about the contrast between the stain against the roof material. Looks great.

so i've got 15 yards of 1 1/2" california green rock sitting  in my backyard / field behind my house..

the director for land development came by the house the other day and said I have a week to get it out or they're gonna get fined and he'll need to get it moved and fine me (basically)

so everyday after work i've been busting my ass trying to shovel all this rock into my yard, we've been on it from the time I get off work until around 8-9 o' clock at night.. put a huge dent in it. I've got maybe 3 more yards and it'll all be done.. back yards looking much nicer... i'll take pics soon and try and get a few shots w/ the fan's installed.

rock's done, thank god. I'm looking forward to sitting around and drinking beer tomorrow... nothing else.

i have my wife take a few pictures, i'll post them tomorrow.

next on the "to do" list is get the grass back to par. we've let it go while doing the patio cover and rock.. so it's starting to die in a few spots.. along with the weeds that are starting to bunch up every where.

Someone give me some tips on lawn care, what do you use?  what seems to work and what doesnt?

My plan was to aerate the yard (because there's a large amount of clay in the dirt)  so it gets water penetration to the roots and use some Scotts weed and feed.

Scott's weed and feed seems real hit or miss for me though, sometimes it does a great job getting the weeds out and the color back in the grass but other times it seems like it does nothing...

I need to get the grass thicker as well, when you look up close you can see alot of dead grass under all the green. I planned on trying to rack some of that out so that new grass can grow in its place.
