Warn 8274

I am seeking some help. I ended up getting a winch for free and when I looked it up to see what it was it turned out to be a Warn 8274  . It looks to be in decent shape, but I have no idea how to see if it works or to check what condition its in. Can anyone help me out?

They work good. A friend of mine runs one. They are pretty fast thats all i remember.... Hell you cant beat free.

8274's are awesome winches...  fast, reliable, huge, hard to mount without sacrificing ground clearance.  if your really into in you can get aftermarket drums, gear kits, motors (double motor kits), air actuated freespool... There is a reason why alot of the winch challenge guys use these winches...

there are people that run them on there yotas... usually they stick pretty far out there... Unless you have your radiator somewhere other than stock than you wont be able to suck it any further in than i have mine..

the motor is about inch away from the radiator guard which is bout 1/2 inch away from the rad.. so you could get closer...

Thanks for the info. I've been looking at how to mount it and it seems like it might be kinda hard.

Get the serial number off the ID plate and download the parts and operation manual from Warn's web site.

There is a rebuild kit available to replace the seals and bushings that is usually about $50 from a 4x4 shop but I found one on Amazon for $19 and it was a genuine Warn Kit. Get 150 feet of new 3/8" wire rope or synthetic rope if you got the bucks if the stuff on it is bad.

I modified a Smittybuilt tube bumper to mount it. I got it as close to the grill as possible. I didn't want to remove the grill or A/C condenser like some people do to tuck it in tight.

Some people might not like it but it works for me. Yeah, I know the lights are not in the best spot but they work for me too.

had to dig way back for this pic... but i modified a smittybuilt to accept the 8274 also.. never liked the way it was attached but i used it to winch a few people out.

yet again no grill.... to tell yea the truth most my yotas i take the grills off.... just dont like em i guess lol

Here is how I did mine.  Bent up my own tube bumper.  It does hang way out there but man it winches in a hurry.  I love it

Wow that looks good, doesn't look like it sticks out too far at all. Got any more pics? I was thinking about making something out of plate since I don't have a bender. Only problem I see is its going to be super heavy.

they are the dogs dangleys of winches. all the chalange trucks run them over here in the uk because of the line speed and 150 foot of cable. you can get uprated motors or run a dual motor setup.

i have made up a tube bumper for a mate to run one on his truck

i had one on my truck. i modifyed a Marlin bumper and it worked great.

Best winch out there. Even thought they are big , gotts wear em proud
