What is RUF?  I am guessing rear up front or something?  What are the advantages to it?  Sorry I just got a 82 yota and tryin to learn here haha.  Let the  :flamer: begin.

SFD4x4

Yes, RUF stands for rear up front.  It is putting a combination of leaf springs from the rear of your truck in place of the front ones.  It is a cheap way to get a set of springs and a little bit of a suspension lift.  It also moves your front axle forward, decreasing the approach angle.  You need to combine two sets of rear springs to do it.  Here is a good link.

Sweet thanks!  Whats the most common way to spring the back when you do that swap?

GONZO97

a lot of people run 63" chevys in the rear.... but it depends on the individual

Cool I will do that.  Thanks guys.

One thing I cant find, If I did the 63" chevy in rear and the RUF how does it sit?  Front a lil lower?

GONZO97

it really depends on how you build up your front pack.... you can add/take out leafs in order to get it to sit how you want... most guys add a few leafs to the RUF and that helps level it out but the 63s are soft very flexy

I have a RUF and Chevy in the rear setup and my front actually sits a little higher, I am going to take a leaf out of the front soon to see if it will level out a little.

This site and pirate4x4.com both have really good info and some really knowledgeable people on them.  Just be aware if you go to pirate you will almost be banished for asking a question like this.  They are not to tolerant of noobs if you haven't searched and ask a question that has already been asked multiple times.  Anyway, welcome to marlin.  Post some pictures of your rig.

Only thing I could find in the backyard to climb on haha.

Have only had it a week.  Had to replace the timing chain and rebuild the carb.  Now its on to the cool stuff!

gtoyonrocks

That things looks pretty clean. That's a great starting point. I love those old first gens.

Ya its fairly clean.  I started on some body work today.  A tree fell on the roof, you can see it in the last pic.  I am probably getting a 83 parts truck pretty soon.  It has good front fenders and a hood too.

gtoyonrocks

Sweet. I can't wait to see this thing progress.

That stinks. I do a lot of buying selling and trading to finance my off roading habits.

That's a pretty straight first gen, try not to cut it up too much!  It's a lot cleaner looking then mine.

I have a set of slightle bent f150s you can have
the will give you 4 - + of lift- for the rear.
I prefer them over chevys.

h8z2luze

Thanks man.  PM'd you.

Well this is what I have been doing all weekend.  I am not sure if it looks better or worse.

you pay for paint and Ill shoot it for you.
you have to do everything else tho, sand mask ect.
usually 100

I only have a half as$ shop but it does the trick

h8z2luze

Sweet.  I suck at bodywork as you can see.

86bobbedtoy

not much point in using bondo on a rig

h8z2luze

Ya it will just get messed up anyway i guess.

86bobbedtoy

in 5 snow runs I
smashed 2 driver fenders
3 marker lights
smashed old bed

h8z2luze

Also gotta keep in mind its my DD too though haha.

gtoyonrocks

I like flat black... I guess it just depends on what your going for. If you have the time to do the prep work I would hit that guy up that said he would shoot your truck for free. You can't beat that deal but then again I'm with you. I hate body work. I would rather pay someone else to do it or trade some fab work for someone to do my body work.

I like flat black too but it looks like crap out of a rattle can.  I need actual body tools lol.  It would be much easier.  I killed a sander over the weekend.  It was old though.  I think I want to go with a dark blue.  But then again it shows all the dings and dents.
