3.0L high idle and running hot
« on: May 28, 2010, 02:26:30 PM »
Just changed the timing belt, water pump, thermostat, and idler pulley. Went to start it up, and it ran fine(smooth), but the truck will sit there and idle at 2500RPM. I let it warm up (still running 2500RPM) and the temp gauge started to go higher than normal, so i shut it down. Any ideas why it is idling high or why it is starting to run hot. What should i be checking into?

If it makes a difference the thermostat and idler pulley are NAPA brand, the rest are from Toyota.

I can provide more info if need be. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

T-stat could be bad, the after market ones are pretty cheaply made.  I know this is going to sound like a dumb question, but did you in stall it the right way?

Does adjusting the idle screw have any effect on the idle?

Should of used a toyota t stat, its not worth getting all toyota to go cheap on that. Did you burp it?
Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?

I burped the system and i think that helped a bunch. I'll put in the old thermostat and see if that changes anything, if it does, then i'll go grab a fresh toyota one. The aftermarket one did look kinda cheap (not to mention different) compared to the old toy one. And yes, the thermostat is installed the correct way.

Adjusting the idle screw did bring the rpms down. i turned it a a few rotations and it dropped the idle down a bunch. I read somewhere that if the timing is too far advanced that could cause the idle to be high and i need to adjust the idle screw accordingly. Could have been the problem considering i did just do the timing belt.

thanks for the link snowtoy.

My 3.0 was once idling very erractic. AFter driving hard it would stay up around 2000. THen it would just go up or down a lot. I reset the computer and had no problems since.

check the mass air flow.. one time that exact same thing happened to me.. a little piece of plastic got stuck holding it open and made it idle at like 2500..
