just bought 84 4runner for my first Rig
« on: May 25, 2010, 10:48:53 PM »
Thanks to everyone for the wealth of great information on this website.  Using this information, I think I was able to find a great first rig.  here is what I know about it:

84 4runner
22R Motor
MC 4.7 Duel Transfer Case
Spool in rear
ARB in Front
High steer with IRS Box
Ramsey 8000 winch
35x15.5 TSL SX Swampers

Everything seems to be in working order, but I figure I better take it all apart and find out why and how it all works, and tighten, and replace worn out things along the way.  Does anyone have a build thread that shows the basic steps to go through a rig like this?  Any suggestions on where I should start?  What are the first things that typically wear out?  I will post some pictures as soon as I get a few more posts.

If it works why mess with it? I'd just change the fluids do a basic tune up. Pop the valve cover off and check the timing chain and guides. First things that typically wear out are stock bifs break when locked up front. Motor wise I'd check the timing chain out, check the valves.

So it has dual cases or just single case with 4:7 gears?

Yea i wouldnt take to much apart, Just make sure it crawls check drive lines and make sure its all there and solid visually, air locker locks and what not, maybe just pull the front end apart check birfs and rebuild front axle is all i would do.

It has duel cases.  the front one is 1:2 and the back is 1:4.7.

The steering arm that goes to the pitman arm has welds on it, so I am gong to start with that.  Also the Front right tie rod end almost hits the tire.  I am sure that if I air down it will hit.  The bolt that hold the tie rod on has been ground down a bit so it will not rub.  Is the best way to fix this with wheel spacers?
