I need a spare tire carrier!! I can't do roof rack as of right now cause of lack of money. I was thinking bout going to a junkyard and picking up one of those Izuzu or something swing aways, then cut off the old lug nut bolts and replace them with toy 5.5 bolts and have myself a swing away. Just bolt it to the rear end like they do and attach the opening lever to the tailgate, and be all set!! what u guys think? ???

I looked into that years ago for an my old 91 p/u.  The early Blazer s10's, don't remember what years, but there were 2 different styles for their rear swing away tire carriers.  One connected to the body, above and below tail light and then clamped to the middle ish of the tailgate.

But the earlier one's, I think like mid 80's had a system where if you have the tailgate lowered and are looking right where the tailgate latches are on the bed, they each had a nice thick plate of steel.  The pass. side had 2 hinges sticking out from the plate, one upper and one lower.  Then the other side looked similar, but with a gate type latch.  Then had a nice shape like "<" sorta, and the best part was the tailgate of the s10 blazer was almost identical to the toyota, I think withing like a half inch!

It would definately work from what I could tell, but it would you may want to reinforce the inside of the bed a bit.

Man, a picture would do 1000 words for this one...

Sounds like a good idea.  If you do this, please post pics.  I am very interested in this because I need one too.  For now, I plan on keeping the spare in the back of the truck, but that may be a problem in the spring when camping is an issue.

:pokinit:, I think I may still have it at my roomates old house, in San Jose.  I'll have to check, I should be back there for Christmas if anyone wants it.  Freebie, if I still got it.  I only had the actualy swing away tube part not the hinges or latch ends

Sounds like a good idea, but you guys will definitely want to brace the hinge side of the bed. All of that weight on that corner will just tear it off. Especially with big off road tires. It is pretty common for rigs with that setup to start having issues around those mounts, and yota pickup beds definitely aren't designed for those kind of stresses.

Fireimp141

Well i definately got a 4runner... so imma go to a junk yard today and pick one out, ill post pics of the process and let you guys know how it turns out, shouldnt be too hard :-\\

Yep, you'd definatelly want to brace it.  My idea was the piece of flat bar used at the tailgate point, basically use an identical piece on the oposite side, (inside the tail light area), and also some 45* brackets from behind the brake light to the bed.

Of course if anything ever comes into contact with your spare tire, it'll probably make tin foil of all that work, but then back to the drawin' board...

Well i went and bought a swingaway today from a junkyard for $45 from an nissan pathfinder, the brackets arent exactly the same from the angles on the ones that go above and below the light, but i figured that since its not for my truck  :hammerhead:  imma just buy some polyurathane blocks and make some wedge type things that conform to the angles of the brackets and then to my truck, and then reinforce it with some metal. Ill take pics of the brackets and swingaway and stuff, and then the polyurathane thingys.

1995 Nissan Pathfinders have a good swinging tire carrier. It connects to the right side qtr panel and the latch is on the bumper. The bolt pattern is the same 6 lug.

Do you have a picture of the hing/axle or some dimentions of the assembly?  I need to build a bumper but would like to use rectangular tubing if possible.  Thanks Jase
