87yotabro87, do you plan on running 37" or larger tires someday, and do you live in the foothills or mountains? If you answered no to both questions, then I would advise running 4.88:1 diff gears with 35" tires. Unless of course, this is only a weekend warrior trail rig ;)

thanks.  Ah well i was thinking 35s would be the biggest I would go. So 4:88s huh? alright because my bro said if im gonna regear, i might as well go with 5:29s. this will still be a DD though. so ill talk to my bro and see what he says. thanks for the info!

Cool, sounds like you've got it all planned then

A common misconception is that 35" tires require 5.29:1 diff gearing. This would only be approximately correct if your tires were indeed a true 35" tall tire. But what you will find out is that your brand new 35" tires will only measure 34.5", and after a couple of seasons they will measure closer to a 33.5" tire.

So in that perspective, if someone was to ask what gears would be good for 33" or 34" tires, I would certainly not recommend 5.29s.

Plus 4.88s are stronger than 5.29s, and if you run a Dual Marlin Crawler Ultimate transfer case system, you are only looking at a 17:1 low range difference. Sure for stock gearing, 37:1 compared to 54:1 is going to make a good difference, but you'd be hard pressed to see a difference of 207:1 Crawl Ratio (using 4.88s) compared to 224:1 Crawl Ratio (using 5.29s).

As for me, I run 5.29s with 37" tires, and there are times that I wish I had 4.88s because I have more than enough power on the freeway and don't want to be over 3,000 rpm just to cruise in 5th. But this is because my 37" tires probably measure 35-3/4" by now.
