Amount of power on hills
« on: Dec 04, 2004, 07:34:36 PM »
Hey guys,

Im just curious of how fast all you go up hills on freeways/higways with your truck.

For me, I have an 81 w/ 38s, 5.29s and the motor has 210K miles on it. I normally go about 40 and 25 on the steep ones. And i only get about 10mpg. And thats with premium gas in it too!

The stroke of your cylinders is made to completly burn regular gas ( the only diff between reg and prem is that is takes longer to burn prem) So that will leave more unburned fuel and not as good emmisions

If you're runnin stockish compression and haven't advanced your timing then Mike D is right, there should be no advantage to runnin premium.  But if you've shaved the head or somethin then you probably hafta run it.  I recently thought I would hafta start runnin premium but last night I ran a buncha engine tuner through it and left it all night, so we'll hafta see if it decides to detonate goin up the hill to work Monday,   Nate

I have a reman 22r carbed 81 toy on 33's  with stock 3.90 gears i can manage 50mph on the steep hills, but she is in third and I have very little weight on board! not sure about gas mileage but 20 bucks of california chevron gets me about 300 miles.  PS  DOnt use premium gas, I used to do the same, its just wasting you money and maybe your 02 sensor, if your gonna spend the extra I highly recommend using Shell or Chevron gas, I get much better mileage with name brand gas.

When going up any hill, its about 45 for me. Last time I went down to pismo, I took 46 over to morro bay first, and was doing about 45 the whole way up the hill. Flat land (such as 101 between salinas and atascadero) it'll cruse at 75 all day long. Thats with 4.10's and 35's with a 22re
This is why I have a daily driver with a v8. I'll do 90 up cuesta grade (not like I would want to)

to start off with, you are running 38's and so automatically mileage is gonna go down.   Also if you are running a 4speed tranny then your screwed.  4 speeds have horrible economy.   if you run like 35s or 33s and save your 38s for the trail then you will definetly get more power and gas milage out of it....

he should have a L50 in his 81,  but with 38's your really to high geared,  drop to 35's and keep the 38's for trail trips,  with 5.29s and 35's  you'll get better mileage,  these motors like to rev i recommend 3200-3500 for a cruise speed, if you hit a hill or are in the mountains stay in 4th and let it rev,   you'll be surprised that you get better mileage

remember other than the R151,  5th gear is strickly an overdrive,  just because you can pull that hill in 5th doesnt mean thats best for your truck or mileage

Thanks for all the info. Today I sold my 38s and bought some 37" Goodyear MT/Rs. I can easily pull steep hills in 4th at 45, no problem. I think that since my D ick Cepeks were 15.5 inches wide and weighed roughly 110 pounds with the rim(tires are 90 a piece and rims about 20) also made it harder for my truck. Im runnin regular now and its just as good. Oh like Glen said i have a L50 5 speed.

I do have a set of 33s im gonna sell but since i have a better tire im gonna sell the 33s.
