83 3rz swap Just back from BAR referee
« on: Mar 13, 2010, 07:02:37 PM »
I am just starting my 3rz swap into my 83 shortbed and I decided to post it on here.  I started blowing some serious smoke out of my truck this summer and I figured that since I have to pull the motor to rebuild it anyway I might as well put a newer, more powerful one in its place.  I picked up a non running 96 tacoma for 900$, it has most of what I need to complete the swap.  So far I have pulled the motors out of my 83 and out of the Tacoma, just finishing up the rebuild of the 3rz,  pulled all the wiring and have started to pull the fuel lines and clutch lines out of my 83. Anyway, here are some pics.

Donor truck

Reason why its not working, the guy I bought it from had pulled the plugs and it had no hood so rain just collected in the pistons, not good.

22r out

Dash and wiring out

3rz wiring harness

Pic of my truck, the subs don't go there.

Nice, looking forward to watching this built too.  Also digging the speaker box, does it interfere with the dash or heater at all?

It doesn't interfere with the heater at all cause I pulled it out.  I am going to try to find some heated seats to put in.

That sucks wang about the watery pistons... how much overbore can the 3RZ take? Here's hoping I can score a dead 3RZ for my 84 down the line.

Ok I know it has been forever since I have posted an update, but I have made some progress.  It slowed down when I cracked a couple of ribs snowboarding.  Anyway, I just got the motor dropped in today.  Here are some pictures.

Cleaned up engine bay to get ready for paint, also had to weld in some sheet metal where the old battery tray had started to rust through.

You can see on the fender where I welded in tabs to hold the EGR and fuse box.

Engine bay all painted and ready to get scratched.  Cut the hole in my firewall for the wires to pass through.

Made some new motor mounts.  I used the mounts out of my donor truck, it was actually pretty easy.  Ended up adding 1/4" plate to the top for extra support.  Ended up moving the mounts about 3 inches back.

Mounted the fuel lines and moved the clutch line to the drivers side.

Engine and transmission ready to go in.

Here it is in.  Picture is kinda bad cause of the light.

And another

I was thinking about this again today; wondering how much little things come up in these swaps that add to the cost/down-time. Yours looks great; I guess you're using the 96's trans and t-case or did you need to get an adapter?

There is a lot of down time, especially since I am taking my time and am just trying do it right the first time.  It's definitaly not my daily driver.  There are little things that come up, but having a complete donor truck made the swap a lot easier.  I had to buy a W56 transmission to go with my gear driven duals but I used the bell housing out of the 96 and put it on the W56.  Overall the swap is going a lot easier then I expected, it really does kind of install itself.  I have yet to do the wiring, saving that for last, I anticipate that to be the hardest part.

I can't wait to see how it turns out. I think this will be my next swap. I would love to put a 2.7 in my truck.

i'm just about where you are with my swap. And i hear you on taking your time and doing it right the first time.  I already had to rethink a couple of choices i made earlier on.  As of now i've got the motor in and wiring harness installed(SDS) which made it easier i think.  Come monday i'll have a new exhaust and it'll be time to break in the motor.  Gook luck and i hope we both end up being successful with our projects.
