For the ignition I wired IG1 and IG2 together to IG on the ignition switch and I wired AM1 and AM2 together to AM on the ignition.  Hope that makes sense.  I basically just wired it how it is supposed to be for the 83 and I just added the two extra wires for the 96 in there designated spots.  All IG's together and all AM's together.

So I finally got my truck all back together the other night and I go take it on a test drive.  I drove it around my shop and everything seemed to be cool, I was stoked! Then the next day, after finally finishing up all the little stuff to make it street legal,  decide to take it on the road.  Everything was good, untill I shifted into third gear.  That's when the god awful, bearing exploding noises started coming from my transmission.  Man am I PISSED!!!!  I bought this transmission from a guy about 4 months ago who claimed everything was cool with it.  Now I have to pull it all back out and tear into the transmission, something I thought I didn't have to worry about.  Besides the transmission, the truck runs great.  I am amazed at the power difference!  I am actually able to use 5th gear now and am able to accelerate up pretty long steep grades on 35's!  I was going to be going to the con this weekend, but I didn't want to risk driving all the way down there with the noise my transmission was making.

Well I think I figured out what the noise is thats coming from my truck.  I don't think it is my transmission, I think it is my own dumb ass fault by putting to much of an angle on my rear drive shaft.  I measured the angle today and it is at 25 degrees.  Pretty sure I need to switch over to a CV shaft.  I pulled the rear shaft, turned my truck on, shifted through all the gears and what do you know; no noise.  So it is a good and a bad thing.  Good cause I am pretty sure I dont have to go through my transmission but bad cause now I have to cut the spring perches off and adjust my rear diff angle which is probably going to more of a pain in the ass then going through the transmission.

Thanks, its also hard to keep up the motivation when it's about 110 degrees in my shop.  I was very impressed with the power difference. I want to get the rear shaft changed so I can take my truck out and see how the new motor is while crawling.

So finally getting back to work on my truck after about three weeks of absolutely no progress, I was so frustrated I didn't ever feel like looking at it.  I cut my old spring perches off this morning and got my axle mocked up under my truck so I could get a measurment for my rear CV drive shaft. I'm really hoping this clears up the grinding noise I was hearing earlier!  Here is more about my luck.  After getting my 83 axle prepped to have the new perches welded on I was cruising craigslist this afternoon and found an IFS rear axle for 50$.  I couldn't pass up the deal and now tomorrow morning I am going to prep the IFS axle and get it set up in my truck.

Got my IFS rear and CV shaft in, going to have some ss braided brake lines made up today then I can take it for a test drive. I'm really hoping this works.  Also, I made an appointment to go to the referee on Wednesday.

Just got back from the BAR referee.  It didn't pass, which didn't surprise me a whole lot but one of the things he failed me for did.  First, the good news, he did sign off on the exhaust crossing under the transmission and running down the drivers side.  That surprised me a lot considering all the trouble people have been having with that.  He failed me for not having my VSS hooked up right, not having a brake signal input going to the ECM and he also said that I need to modify my fuel tank and put all 1996 tacoma components in it.  Having to modify the fuel tank really surprised me.  I have a second gen EFI fuel tank in, which many others have done and passed just fine with it.  So back to the shop I go.  I can't wait to have this thing signed off!

I hope you got his name, number, and a card or something- make damn sure you go back to the same guy! You got really lucky with the exhuast crossover, a different ref probobly won't let it by. The Taco gas tank has more evap hookups, that's why he wants you to update it.

It did fix the noise.

I got his name and I am going to make sure I go back to him next time, he talked to his supervisor about the exhaust who was also ok with it.  He did say that the exhaust has been a very touchy issue with these conversions.  It did get put on a dyno and it runs amazingly clean.

I'm getting ready to go ref my swap in a bit so this seems relevant.  Why won't he let you use your old tank?  My donor was a 97 4Runner and the only stuff coming in or going out of the 97 tank is the high-pressure fuel line, then there are vent and return lines.  This is the same as the old tanks.

Is is just that the 96 3RZ Tacoma tank is different than a 97 5VZ 4Runner tank or what?  Because I'm under the impression that I can use an old tank with spliced wiring as long as the fuel, vent, and return are hooked up...

Re: 83 3rz swap Just back from BAR referee, AGAIN
« Reply #86 on: May 13, 2011, 11:14:15 AM »
So I took my truck into the BAR again yesterday.  I had fixed all the complaints they had about it the first time.  I had all my monitors set to "on", put a CARB approved air intake on it and fixed an idle issue i had been having.  After about an hour the guy came back out and said... it FAILED!  I asked him why and he said, "your emissions are too high"  WTF!!! Last time I brought it in it passed the emissions with flying colors, now 8 months later it fails.  Way frustrating.  The good news is he said the rest of the truck looks good just need to get the NOx down.  He signed off on my crossover exhaust and he had no issue with my fuel tank unlike the last ref.  I just ran some sea foam through my engine and some injector/guranteed to pass smog stuff through.  I'm going to go back next week to see if it helps.  Hopefully it will.

So I went to the BAR ref again this morning and look at what I got!

Passed smog with flying colors and I got it all registered today. About F-ing time! My NOx were about 750 lower then last time I went in. I did three things to try to lower it. I ran some guaranteed to pass smog stuff in my fuel, put a restrictor behind my hi-flow cat to slow the exhaust down and I ran my truck on the freeway for about 30 min before I brought it in to bring the cat up to temp. Huge difference in results. Now I can start working on fun things again.
