steering has a mind of its own
« on: Mar 10, 2010, 12:40:50 AM »
i have a 90 4runner with some steering problem. i get no assistance from the power steering like its not there. then sometimes when i try and turn the wheel it rips out of my hands and turns itself all the way to lock in the opposite direction. ive replaced the pump already. didnt seem to help. anyone ever herd of this before. its driving me nuts because i cant even drive it.

no theres no binding. the box is relocated and the high steer is all set up correctly and it all worked great. until this happened. i think something got clogged. and i hardly trust a remanufactured one year warranty power steering pump. there was an abs actuator that is operated by power steering fluid pressure. it had a pressure line in and one out and then went to the steering box. i got rid of all that a while back and had a custom one piece hydro line made. and it all worked after that.

I've been drinking but is it possible to hook the lines up backwards on the steering box?

hows your alignment and or tire wear. My alignmnt was off for a while causing my tires to wear bad on the inside (85 axle) and it would do the same thing. I also replaced the box with a used one from a buddy and just by doing that it steered better...it would actually return to center

i wish my problems were that simple alignment is perfect. this truck litteraly was built extreme and done right. i even still drove it daily till i got a dodge to tow it with. i let it sit for a while and started having problems. im just gonna start over with this power steering im determined something is clogged and not letting pressure through.i think there is back pressure on the pump because the throttle kick up on the pump sprung a leak. its got to be a plugged up box

Could maybe be a combination of caster and clogged veins in the PS possibly?

Just my less than 2 cents.

turned out to be a bad box. unfortunately while i was climbing up on a cart (with wheels on it) at the local 4x4 shop to get my new/used box of a shelf... the cart rolled out and i ate it into a pile of parts. little blood and a few bruises. but hey, it all works now.
