F 150 Forwards or backwards?
« on: Mar 08, 2010, 02:27:47 PM »
Alright I know there is info on F150's I've done tons of research but what I want to know is wether to run them forwards or backwards. I have a 93 extended cab. How bad would my pinion angle be. This my daily driver and I'm doing it on a budget so the cheapest and easiest way to get it done and back on the road is how I want to do it. I was leaning towards backwards oh yeah what about axle wrap when running them backward? All the help I can get would be appreciated. I'm going to the junkyard tomorrow. also any pics of them backwards would be helpful and pinion angle pics. Thanks! One more thing I already have an aftermarket 6" shackle on my truck in case that matter's

I ran my backwards.  Axle wrap is noticeable in sand and on snow haven't noticed while in mud or rocks.  My pinion angle actually looks pretty good to me.  I am running a home made 6.5" shackle.

Thanks for your help I'm a poor Bricklayer too. Oh and why did you move your rear shackle. I thought when you run them backwards you don't have to move the rear shackle.

you COULD get by without moving the rear shackle hanger but it'll move your rear axle back about 2" so it won't be centered in the wheel well.  It is cheaper to move the rear hanger though so you don't have to mess with making a longer d-shaft.

ran mine backward. stock shackle mount in the rear.  axle did move back 2.5-3".  d shaft not modified.  i moved the axle back because i didnt want to bob 4runner.

i read that running them forward gave about the same amount of rear overhang as the chevy's

I ran mine forwards with a 1 1/2" longer shackle and didnt even move my rear shackle hanger. The angle isnt that bad.

I would deffinately run them short side forwards. The backwards just doesnt make sense to me and there not that much over hang at at.It's basically the same as an aftermarket spring.

heres mine while i was finishing the bob.  long side forward.  rear hanger stock location.  skys chevy kit.  worked good for me.  81 shortbed bobbed 13 inches.

same setup on my 4runner...

RUF on both trucks.  on the pickup i really wanted the extra wheelbase and best possible departure...i dragged my ass everywhere on our trails.  also wanted the extra wheelbase on the runner cuz i dont plan on bobbing it.

I made my own hanger. 1/4" thick box steel 13'' long. cut it corner to corner to make two wedges. drill holes to mount springs and round off the corner then weld it to your frame.

What I did for my hangers is I found some old Small block dodge motor mounts and they are 3" wide in the inside and 3/16" thick. They real mod I had to do to then was fill in the 4 holes on the outside and make a 1/2" hole in the middle. :)
