Recently became a Toyota man. I acquires a 1980 PU from a friend who was moving. This truck was parked in a garage in 1986 and sat there until last year when by friend moved he had to get rid of a lot of things so my Dad got this truck and pulled it over to his place. Gives me a call a few days later and says, "want a project" that was 14 months ago. Now I live a few states away and have little space to work.

The dream- Get this gal running and go join all of you on the trail it has been too long.
this is what I have..... well I would put a picture But I am guessing because I am a new-b I don't have access yet so you will have to set at the edge of your seat until you all open your doors and let em in.

I am looking at going Vortex I have the transmition adaptor plate for the Chevy block but I am missing all of the guts for the rig- radiator, alt, start, carb, (think I have the heater core in the passanger set) I do have a trany, but basically shes not really well endowed under the hood. so I ask you fellow yota crew, "what shall I do" I could get a donner truck (80 with the R20 under the hood) and do a swap. Then I would adapt to the Vortex or the Chevy down the road.

What I think I should do but am unsure of is if I could get a S10 or something with a Vortex under the hood that is running and do the swap. Here is the catch I have not done custom fab and don't have the space or supplies (but could find some folks with it for some basic stuff). So I am trying to keep it a easy as possible at this time. One day I will have a huge shop.... you know the dream we all share it....so if any of you have advice for my gutless buildup let me know I await your knowledge.

-Thanks,

Ohh yeah P.S. No Title on this one any tip on gettinn a Colorado title?

Welcome to Marlin and also to Toyotas

Actually I think that you can post up pictures when your a newb.  I am not sure but you might give it a shot.

What's your plans?
Lift?
Tires?
Duals?

Does the truck have a motor in it and it's just been a while since it was ran?  Or is there no motor?

dezrik

TITLE First then Build.

Does the truck have license plates at all? If it does Call the DMV or Sheriffs office and Ask for a Name or Phone number of the person it was registered too, Then call them up and get them to get a title and sign it over.

Or You can go through the Bonds Process and get a title this way

or You can call a towing place and ask them if they would mail the owners a registered letter saying they have it impounded and they owe $$$$$ to get it out of tow, if they don't get a response in 30-60 days ( I think its 60) They can get you a Title.

or You can find a mechanic that will file a Lien against the vehicle and after 60 days of no payment the Mechanic will get a title... just a few options here :D

Thanks to all for the advice I will look into the mechanic with the lean that seams like a good deal if it is easy for him to get a title. other wise I would have to tow the thing (remember I am in a diffrent state about 1300 miles away) down to the sheriff office and have them do a Vin Certification (verify no leans) this as I understand is the bond process, or making sure there is no bonds on the rig. I have plates on the rig (exp in 86) but the last owner is out of the picture ran off like 15 years ago. I don't have anything under the hood its just a cool spot to kick back and look at the stars right now.

Plans include a Vortex if that is the way to go or a 305 something that will turn 35-37's and then get her to flex like the best of em.

"Get her running with a 22r first, ..." -aikane

What kind of HP do you all get out of the 22R vs the 22RE and the 22?? (there seam to be so many 22 motors out there whats the best one to turn 37's). Is the swap form the 22 to a Vortex or a 305 any diffrent than a 20 to the Votrex or 305? seems like it would involve the same thing (my guess is the easy way is to get a rig with the vortex in it that runs and use it as the donner rig) anyone who has done this pipe in.

It's all about gearing.  put dual transfercases and lower gears in your axles and a 22R or 22RE will turn 37's no problem

wikipedia:
Code  Power (HP)           Torque N·m (ft·lbf)  Years Comments
22R    (97) at 4800 rpm   (129) & 2800 rpm    1981–1990 carb dual row timing chain ('81-'82)
22R    (108) at 5000 rpm (138) & 3400 rpm     1990–1995 carb single row timing chain ('83-'90)
22R-E (105) at 4800 rpm (137) & 2800 rpm     1983–1984 EFI, single row timing chain
22R-E (112) at 4600 rpm (142) & 3400 rpm     1985–1995 EFI, single row timing chain

It would be much easier to put another 22R/RE back in the truck because of the motor mounts and things like that.  But any motor can be installed with time and money.  Pros to an engine swap are more power.  But you also add a lot more wieht to the front suspension and you have clearance issues and wiring and computer issues.  Adapters and brackets.  It's all dependant on how much work your willing to put into it.

Decisions decisions-
Looks like I have some researching to do.

So from what you are all telling me I should go get a 22R or 22RE from the junk yard and plop er in this hole?

So the new question is 22r or 22re the original motor was the 20R (looks like the R-E gives the better power -Thanks~ Yota87Truck). Would it be best, get a running yota that I could pull everything from or get the 22r/re with the wiring/carb and junk from the yard?
The real question is what all do I need from the doner truck just the motor and wiring or do I need anything else. As you can see I am missing about everything that goes under the hood.

Yota87Truck

RE gets better power because its fuel incjected.  The R and RE are the same motor, but the R is carbed.  If you could find a RE truck to swap everything over that would be best cause you need things like a computer and the in tank pump.  I am not sure but the 22 and 20 are probably pretty close to the same.  I am sure if you found either in good condition in a junk yard you could make them work pretty easily in your truck.

Also did you have the sock 4 speed manual in your truck?  You may want to upgrade to a stronger 5 speed transmission while your in there.  Especially if your doing the 22RE.

HuKiT

There is a 5 speed in there now, don't think it was stock but in the pic you can see how clean the new tranny bell housing is.

Front Clip eh... It's in the bed of the truck... getting some rest I guess. Fenders and hood are all straight though.

Been shopping around on Craigslist for a donor Truck in the Portland area. If you know someone who has one that's totaled but with a running engine keep me in the loop.
I did find one in No Cal about 2 weeks ago but after gas and a trailer rental it was well over $800 not worth the skipped day at work.

HuKiT

Got some pics from my Dad and the engine mounts have been moved.
anyone know the measurments for putting in a chevy engine (type of engine as well 4.3/305)?
