Still fairly new to the Toyota scene. Im building my rig and realized I have a cracked exhaust manifold. I was just going to weld it but I was told stock headers are cast. What are some good headers to look at? I live in NY and my truck is 26 years old so it does not have to pass smog or emissions.

Check out my build thread. I should have plenty of updates coming!  :drooling:

I would check out Downy, Doug Thorley and LC Engineering. You can google any of those. They are all good quality parts.

Well if you want to go the cheaper route, And are not looking for an exhaust header and just replace the OEM exhaust manifold.

Go to Autozone, I bought the OEM replacement. A company Dorman makes the manifold. The Kit comes with everything needed. (manifold, manifold gaskets and flange gaskets, flange bolts)

The manifold gasket sold seperate was 39 bucks after tax

But for the whole kit its $82.99

Its cheaper to buy the kit then to but the gaskets and rummage a junk yard looking for a used header that cost more. thats my  :twocents:'s

I bought it and have no complaints, it bolted right up and passed Ca smog emissions perfectly

Good to know. I had no idea you could get one of these from a parts store. Just keep in mind a header will make a noticable difference.

Yea i originally wanted to buy a header, but finding one for Ca emissions with (o2) sensor and not paying an arm and a leg is hard to find.

So unfortunately my wallet held me back from buying a header so I was stuck to replace it with a aftermarket OEM manifold that i could afford

I posted the link to autozones website. The part number listed is for a 85 22RE motor. You can order it from the store and most likely have the next day. (FYI) everyone knows what type of people work at auto zone so I would look up the the one you need online and have the part number in hand when in the store ordering instead of them looking up a part number and order the wrong one.  :twocents:

Ya i printed the info provided by you and high lited the part number..  Thanks again

Gixxer Jon

No Problem, Just glad I was able to pass on the info and help someone out by saving them some money.

Just make sure when you go to pick it up, to make sure all the parts are there (as depicted in the photo) I was missing a flange gasket, but he walked in the back and got one off the shelf for me.

It cost me $35 to surface my manifold after it was warped...............

Wonder how long the new Chinese manifold will last.

yeah, but has has a crack in it, it's easier to sand down than weld cast

My manifold originally had a crack 1/2-3/4 around the center between the 2nd and 3rd piston. My tig welder and oxy/acet bottles will fix the crack in it but i said screw my cost in labor to weld up the crack. So I bought an aftermarket from autozone and I will end up welding up the original manifold here in a few weeks to have as a spare later on down the road.

Oh wow, I didnt know autozone carried somthing like that! Forgot I was dealing with the awesomeness of old Toyota.

I'll skip the performance one for now and get a OEM replacement.

Gixxer Jon

I was suprised when i found the manifold on their website.. I was searching and searching to find a reasonable price for a header, then started searching dismantling yards and how much they wanted for a used header since Toyotas in the Bakersfield Junkyards have been picked through with a fine comb. So I saw the oem replacement through autozone and i was suprised i could get a part like that through them.. So i snagged one up.

Dr Phat

Thanks again for the heads up!

Picked it up from CarQuest today for about 110 with gaskets and all.

Will be updating my build thread soon with a cab swap and flexy upgrade!

Gixxer Jon

thats cool i think CarQuest is a few bucks more.. but if carquest was closer then you would be spending the same price to drive to autozone...

CarQuest (by me at least) has people that work there that actually know about cars and not how to punch a year make and model into a computer and they treat me well.

Cant wait to get this cab swap and header done!

Gixxer Jon

Dr. Phat, did you get your manifold on yet? FYI, Mine has been working like a champ.. Gotta love not having an exhaust leak..

Dr Phat

Yup! Got my manifold.

I put it on when I was doing my cab swap.

However, I havent got a chance to start it or put the rest of the exhaust back on. Im back in school now in MA (I live in NY) and my battery was dead when I went to start it lol.

Made a nice EGR block of plate too. =P

Just cut the tubes off the mounting plates and had my buddy plug them up with his TiG welder and ground them flat.

Gixxer Jon

Id be Dragging your Yota into your dorm room piece by piece and assemble it in the room. A guy rebuilt his whole car and assembled it in his livingroon in a high rise. They tore a hole in the side of the building to get the car out with a crane. I cant find the pictures of it online...

You wonder WTF he was thinking LOL

Dr Phat

I dont think my Lieutenant or Company Commander would appreciate it...or would I pass room inspections. Hahhaha.

Worth a try though!

I had a spare tire for my Frontier in my room once though.

Leave the heat shields off them.  That will help with the cracking issue.
