question about 7.5 IFS rear (give in axle shaft)
« on: Feb 08, 2010, 04:02:39 PM »
Hey all. I bought a great rear off a guy on here 2 years ago it would be a 7.5 IFS with detriot true trac. My question is the passenger side axle shaft where it goes into the ifs is real sloppy and clunkin (I think) how far will I need to go to rebuild this thing? no shavings in  the oil just rear bad clunk. with axle slap on inside. You sit on the passenger side and it feels like it is gonna let loose. EXCESSIVE CLUNK

We got pounded with a bad storm over the weekend and we are due for another one tomorrow nite. 28 inches of snow, now we are gettin another 14 to 20.

Thanks

im really confused..are you talking about a front IFS CV axle (7.5in diff) or a rear IFS axle shaft (8in diff) ??

ok just making sure cuz in your original post you say rear a few times. if your sure its coming from the axle just buy a new one or find some used ones online that are in good condition, there not much money. but there could also be a lot of other 'klunks' coming from the front end that have nothing to do with an alxe shaft.

replaced one of the diff mounts with a new one, I was wondering if cv axles go bad and klunk over time I would think if it was bad or worn it would fall apart all together.always get the klunk between reverse and going forward like (imagine a bad slip joint in a drive shaft when you change the pressure on the shaft from forward to reverse, hence the klunk but not in this case, this is the best example I can come up with.

ya, i know exactly what you talking about. only downside is it could be so many different things. probably the easiest thing would be to put the front of the frame on jack stands and just start moving anything you can by hand to see if anythings abnormally loose. i don't have any personal experience with cv axles going out on any of my trucks but i do know that they make clunking sounds that your describing, because ive ridden in other vehicles with bad ones. and as far as them falling apart because they are loose isn't true. it doesn't take much for them to wear out and loosen up to where there making noise...but nothing to where there just literally gonna fall apart on their own.

I plow for a transmission shop they put it on the lift for me and we couldnt narrow it down that was last year and again this year. The only real note was the play in the shaft on the passenger side flange the cv axle mounts to on the 7.5 rear. Had play but not terrible amount, no oil leak yet.

The oil was dropped last year and no shavings were in the oil it was clean. Had the same noise but not as loud

Do have spare CV axle laying around was thinkin of changing it out to eliminate the axle shaft

I've got the same issue on my 87.  I am going down to the pick n' pull to get one less worn, and probably replace the axles while I'm at it.

Sounds to me like you broke a side gear shaft. The stub shaft is what the half shaft bolts to and goes into the diff. Mine broke off in the splines and I had to pull it all apart to get the piece out of the diff.

You can see how to do it here. It is an FSM for a 93 but the front diffs for IFS are the same from 86-95.

If it broke I wouldnt have 4 wheel drive right i would assume unless pieces of the broken shaft were lodged in there?
I do have a spare donor 7.5 in the shed it has the 4.11s in it I have 4.88s in the blue truck
