The best place to start your search is www.rockstomper.com they seem to be pretty good at keeping it together after one of their trucks made it into top truck challenge a couple of years ago!!

Yea,,rockstomper.com has a great long travel set up for ifs that works pretty good..I mean its still ifs but at least with his set up its better..I run the stock ifs set up in my tacoma off road and it does fine..I beat the holy crap out of it..But then its just a beater any way and i just don't care...But out in the sand its a blast having that soft suspension..It don't hold a candle to my solid axle toy on the rocks..

a good friend and fellow wheeler runs a taco with old man emu stuff in it and I am really impressed, his rear flexes so well. the front does not have much travel but I do believe that AOR has the Total Chaos suspension available, but it is spendy, I have seen this set ip in action and it is impressive. something like 12 inches of travel in the front with T100 front CV's.... Just a thought.

IFS would be great (of course independent wheel flex is ideal in theory) but one of the biggest concerns is that not only is it heavier than a live axle, but the majority of the weight is fully connected to the chassis and at a higher location. So the center of gravity is much much higher as compared to a live axle.
The live axle's weight is fully suspended by the tires, and below the springs, whereas the IFS the weight is bolted to the chassis. This is why live axles has a nicer ride over perpendicular objects and this is why the shocks always go out on IFS much faster than on Live axles.

Just to much weight to high up and connected to the frame. I think that if it did not have this drawback, then it would out wheel a live axle.

Regards,
BigMike

yea,,I would love to have the total choas kit.right now i have the allpro front 2in spacers and those alone helped alot.I have a buddy that hasa t/c it in his tacoma.kicks ass.I am just not sure what I am going to do with my tacoma yet,,for now I'm just wheeling the piss out of it..I though about a motor transplant,(that was the orignal plan)but after getting it running, its alot of fun thrashing a 2000 tacoma..I have taken it too several races over the last couple of months and have taken first in 4 out of 5 with it in the 4cyl class..the one race they ran 4 and 6 together and i got beat by a supercharged v-6 tacoma...

I still running IFS but I don't hit major rocks with it. I have some unlimited cv's and some spacers from rockstomper installed. Works pretty good but I am shooting for a SAS when I can afford it.

I still run the stock IFS.  I lucked out a couple of years ago and got one of Drew's Idler Arms before he quit making them.  That was a life saver for me.  I was chewing up an arm a trip before hand.
I also run lockers front and rear.  I carry spare CV's.  My biggest thing is I watch my front tires very carefully when on the trail so I don't crank the tires one way or the other full lock.   Any other questions go ahead and shoot me an email at
JackDucummon@msn.com and I will be more than happy to pass along anything that I have learned.
 Hope this helps.

I ran my IFS pretty hard for 5 years before it finally gave out.  During that time I never broke a CV or axle shaft.   It had an EZ locker in the front and a Softlocker in the rear.  Also had an Ultimate Marlin dual case setup w/4.56's and 33" BFG's.  To reduce wear on the front end I'd run the easy stuff in 2WD lo.  Also, in the knarly stuff my first choice was to finesse it.  Never tried to force anything.

You can wheel IFS pretty hard but after awhile it will begin to break down.  I ended up doing a SAS this year more so for reliablilty than anything else.

For me IFS problematic parts were Idler Arms and the front crossmember bracket that bolts through your front diff.

awhile back I almost got an ifs truck, i was thinking of going to the junk yard and getting the ifs out of a t-100(because there so much wider than a normal toy) and make my own axle shafts and using the t-100 ifs for a longer travel and to make it wider, it would take some fabing skills, but it would be cheap, and nabe flexy?
but it would be stronger if you did it right!
I want someone to try it!!, if not i will some day

gonna say no, if you run the Total Chaos long travel kit you run em to keep four wheel drie and those arms extend you to 3" wider per side. so each T100 axle is 3" longer than a mini truck IFS
:willynilly: '89 truck SAS sittin on 35's, Tacoma rear axle w/ E-Locker, welded front

I got Stock toyota ifs on my 88 pickup. with a rough 3 inch body and 2 inch shakle in the rear and cranked torrison bars in front. Im running 35 12.5 swampers with 2 inch wheel spacers and it goes places! i think ifs is strong or at least mine.... cause i rail the S**T out of it and it still gets me to work every day after! lol

i'll agree i had a 95 runner with a 2" body and Old Man Emu coils in the rear on 33" no lockers no gears or anything. it took a few tries on some stuff but i could make it through anything that my buddy did and he has a Cherokee on 33", but he does drive a jeep after all. :rofl2:

hey, i wheeled ifs for a couple years before i got my sas together and done..
all i had was a welded rear, (and front later on) some aftermarket torsion bars, warn hubs, and some 33" bfg mud terrains..
with ifs, its all slow goin and finesse. i learned that the hard way. I broke a total of 5 CV joints...
i even did the roundup in 07.
sliders are a must, along with a rear locker and lots of practice.

One cool thing about ifs is, if you wheel with it, youll and learn how to pick your lines carefully, then when you get a solid axle, driving through obstacles seems so much easier...

Yeah i will second that going from IFS to solid axle i am a way better driver for it.  i did enjoy my IFS but i love my solid axle.  and that is also true you do get some cool pics with the IFS sometimes.
