Quartzsite, AZ 01-15-2010
« on: Jan 10, 2010, 04:33:15 PM »
Our club will be returning to Quartzsite, Arizona on January 15th for the annual Quartzsite activities and events that includes the huge RV and Outdoor show, 100s of swap and flea markets, various vendor booths, rock and gem shows, food courts, etc. plus great scenic and historical off-roading in the surrounding desert and mountain areas. Some of us may be arriving at different times or days, but we will keep in touch and offer needed information or directions via the excellent local cell service. We'll be camping at the same location as in previous years-the La Posa Tyson Wash BLM camping area approx. 2.4 miles South of interstate 10 on the West side of highway 95, which offers spacous open dry camping areas for motorhome groups-check out a map of the camping and RV/swap meet area on our January 2008 BB Quartzsite trip. There's a moderate camping fee which includes access to a dump station, potable water, porta-potties, and trash bins. There's also local tank trucks that drive through the campgrounds that will fill your RV water tanks or dump your gray and black tanks for a fee.
We found our small hand-held family walkie-talkies came in handy to stay in touch with one another while exploring the shows. Remember to bring fire wood and Happy Hour food to share!

There's some great scenic and challenging trails nearby:

-Drippng Springs, a moderate trail that leads to historic indian petroglyphs and old gold mines.
-Palm Canyon, an easy trail into the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge.
-Castle Dome Mountains, a moderate tail through the Kofa Refuge to old indian caves and well preserved old mining areas.
-Buckskin Mountains, a moderate trail that leads to the famous Nellie E. Saloon, a saloon and eating place at an old mining camp located in the middle of nowwhere-great food and live entertainment! Open only weekends.
-Presidents Choice, a short 1 mile challenging and rocky loop rated 4 out of 5!

We went out for the day on Saturday, Rocks For Brains drove the entire day un-spotted so he's fluffing his chest. Only driving I did was the 2 hrs to get there and 2 hrs back. We had a great time, if you follow the 1st post link it will take you to some pics of the day.
